Quarterback prospect Andrew Luck received significant attention in the weeks preceding the draft. On April 17, Indianapolis general manager Ryan Grigson announced that the team would take Luck as their first-overall pick after releasing their longtime starting quarterback Peyton Manning, saying it was "the right thing to do" in anticipation of the "media gauntlet" Luck would face in the days leading up to the draft.{{cite news|url=http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/eye-on-football/18812990/colts-gm-ryan-grigson-confirms-indianapolis-will-select-andrew-luck-no-1|title=Colts GM Ryan Grigson confirms Indianapolis will select Andrew Luck No. 1|date=April 24, 2012|first=Will|last=Brinson|work=Eye on Football|publisher=CBS Sports}} Luck was highly touted as one of the best quarterback prospects in years and widely regarded as the top overall prospect in the draft.{{Cite web |last=Christensen |first=James |title=2012 NFL Draft Big Board: Ranking the Top 100 Prospects |url=https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1117715-2012-nfl-draft-big-board-ranking-the-top-100-prospects |access-date=2022-03-05 |website=Bleacher Report |language=en |archive-date=March 5, 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220305023114/https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1117715-2012-nfl-draft-big-board-ranking-the-top-100-prospects |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |title=NFL draft: Andrew Luck's early retirement casts new, strange light on 2012 draft class |url=https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-draft-andrew-lucks-early-retirement-casts-new-strange-light-on-2012-draft-class-193108669.html |access-date=2022-03-05 |website=sports.yahoo.com |date=August 25, 2019 |language=en-US |archive-date=March 5, 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220305023113/https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-draft-andrew-lucks-early-retirement-casts-new-strange-light-on-2012-draft-class-193108669.html |url-status=live }} As a result, he had been the subject of the "Suck for Luck" campaigns by fans, who hoped that their teams would end up with the worst record in the 2011 season so they would have the chance to draft him.{{Cite web |last=Hodkowski |first=Ryne |title=NFL: Why 'Suck for Luck' or Any Similar Campaign Is an Impossible Endeavor |url=https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1000692-nfl-why-suck-for-luck-or-any-similar-campaign-is-an-impossible-endeavor |access-date=2022-03-05 |website=Bleacher Report |language=en |archive-date=March 5, 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220305023114/https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1000692-nfl-why-suck-for-luck-or-any-similar-campaign-is-an-impossible-endeavor |url-status=live }}{{cite news|url=http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/21/us/suck-for-luck-could-be-best-hope-for-nfls-worst/index.html|title="Suck for Luck" could be best hope for NFL's worst|date=October 21, 2011|publisher=CNN.com|first=Steve|last=Politi|access-date=January 9, 2012|archive-date=May 12, 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120512103421/http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/21/us/suck-for-luck-could-be-best-hope-for-nfls-worst/index.html|url-status=live}} He was successful with the Colts, but dealt with several injuries throughout his career and decided to retire in 2019 while still in his prime, after winning the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award.{{Cite web |date=2019-08-25 |title=Luck retires, calls decision 'hardest of my life' |url=https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/27456682/luck-retires-calls-decision-hardest-my-life |access-date=2022-03-05 |website=ESPN.com |language=en |archive-date=September 30, 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220930225210/https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/27456682/luck-retires-calls-decision-hardest-my-life |url-status=live }} Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Robert Griffin III was the subject of another major story in the draft. He was selected second-overall by the Washington Redskins, and had a breakout rookie season en route to winning that year's NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. The draft was highly regarded for its quarterback talent, with six out of the eleven quarterbacks selected (Luck, Griffin III, Ryan Tannehill, Russell Wilson, Nick Foles, and Kirk Cousins) selected to at least one Pro Bowl. Tannehill and Foles both had a season in which they led the NFL in passer rating; Foles was also named MVP of Super Bowl LII. As of 2022, Cousins is ranked in the top ten in career passer rating and completion percentage.{{Cite web |title=NFL Passer Rating Career Leaders |url=https://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/pass_rating_career.htm |access-date=2022-03-05 |website=Pro-Football-Reference.com |language=en |archive-date=September 13, 2019 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190913194612/https://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/pass_rating_career.htm |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |title=NFL Pass Completion % Career Leaders |url=https://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/pass_cmp_perc_career.htm |access-date=2022-03-05 |website=Pro-Football-Reference.com |language=en |archive-date=August 8, 2019 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190808165003/https://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/pass_cmp_perc_career.htm |url-status=live }} Wilson was the most successful quarterback of the draft, making nine Pro Bowls and leading the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl victory.{{Cite web |last=Gaines |first=Cork |title=WHERE ARE THEY NOW? There were two players drafted in 2012 at 28 years old. Brandon Weeden became the oldest first-round selection in NFL history at 28 years old when he was selected by the Cleveland Browns, but left the team after two seasons.{{Cite web |date=2012-05-31 |title=First and 10: Browns QB Brandon Weeden |url=https://www.espn.com/blog/playbook/fandom/post/_/id/3360/first-and-10-browns-qb-brandon-weeden |access-date=2022-03-05 |website=ESPN.com |language=en |archive-date=March 5, 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220305023112/https://www.espn.com/blog/playbook/fandom/post/_/id/3360/first-and-10-browns-qb-brandon-weeden |url-status=live }} Jeris Pendleton became the oldest seventh-round selection in NFL history at 28 years old when he was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he left the team after one season. Brock Osweiler and Ryan Lindley also had largely unsuccessful careers in the NFL. A rare occurrence happened when the first and final picks in the draft were both quarterbacks and were taken by the same team; Chandler Harnish was chosen with the final pick of the draft by the Colts, causing him to be dubbed Mr. Irrelevant for 2012.{{Cite web |date=2012-04-28 |title=Quarterbacks go first, last in 2012 NFL draft |url=https://www.espn.com/blog/statsinfo/post/_/id/42944/quarterbacks-go-first-last-in-2012-nfl-draft |access-date=2022-06-23 |website= |publisher=ESPN |language=en |archive-date=June 23, 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220623164014/https://www.espn.com/blog/statsinfo/post/_/id/42944/quarterbacks-go-first-last-in-2012-nfl-draft |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |last=Rolfe |first=Ben |date=2021-04-29 |title=NFL Draft's Mr. Irrelevant: History of the NFL Draft's last pick |url=https://www.profootballnetwork.com/history-of-mr-irrelevant-and-nfl-draft-last-pick/ |access-date=2022-06-23 |website= |publisher=Pro Football Network |language=en-US |archive-date=July 2, 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220702235302/https://www.profootballnetwork.com/history-of-mr-irrelevant-and-nfl-draft-last-pick/ |url-status=live }} Besides its quarterbacks, the draft overall is considered one of the best of all-time with numerous prospects showing Hall of Fame talent throughout their careers, including Defensive Player of the Year winners Luke Kuechly and Stephon Gilmore, along with perennial Pro Bowlers Lavonte David, Bobby Wagner, Fletcher Cox, T.
