The 2013–14 Washington Capitals season was the 40th season for the National Hockey League franchise that was established on June 11, 1974.{{cite book|last=National Hockey League|title=The National Hockey League Official Guide & Record Book/2013|year=2012|publisher=Triumph Books|page=[https://archive.org/details/nationalhockeyle0000unse_u6g5/page/127 127]|isbn=978-1-60078-785-0|url=https://archive.org/details/nationalhockeyle0000unse_u6g5/page/127}} The Capitals failed to make the playoffs for the first time since the 2006–07 season, ending their six-season playoff streak.
