A by-election for the Welsh Assembly constituency of Ynys Môn was held on 1 August 2013,{{cite news|url=https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-politics-23072242|title=Ynys Mon by-election set for 1 August|date=26 June 2013|via=www.bbc.co.uk}} The by-election was triggered following the resignation on 20 June 2013 of its sitting Assembly Member, Ieuan Wyn Jones.{{Cite web|url=https://senedd.wales/|title=Senedd Cymru | Welsh Parliament|website=senedd.wales}}
The election was the third Assembly by-election to be held since its formation in 1999, and the first for over seven years (the previous contest being at Blaenau Gwent in June 2006).
Prior to the by-election, the governing Labour Party held exactly half the Assembly seats, meaning a gain for that party (who have held the equivalent seat in the House of Commons since 2001) would have given the Welsh government a two-seat majority.
Election
Six candidates were nominated for the election.{{cite news |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-23182533 |title=Ynys Mon by-election: Six names put forward for poll |publisher=BBC News online |date=5 July 2013}}{{Cite web |url=http://www.ynysmon.gov.uk/Journals/2013/07/08/v/d/u/Datganiad_am_personau_a_enebwyd.pdf |title=Datganiad am y Personau a Enwebwyd a Rhybudd y Bleidlais / Statement of Persons Nominated and Notice of Poll |access-date=2013-07-17 |archive-date=2016-03-03 |publisher=ynesmon.gov.uk |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160303224502/http://www.ynysmon.gov.uk/Journals/2013/07/08/v/d/u/Datganiad_am_personau_a_enebwyd.pdf |url-status=dead }}{{cite news |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-north-west-wales-23545120 |title=Plaid's Anglesey win 'energising' for party, says Rhun ap Iorwerth |publisher=BBC News online |date=2 August 2013}}
