The 2016 African Nations Championship, also known for short as the 2016 CHAN and for sponsorship purposes as the Orange African Nations Championship, was the 4th edition of the biennial African association football tournament organized by CAF featuring national teams consisting of players playing in their respective national leagues. It was held in Rwanda from 16 January to 7 February 2016.{{cite web|last=Komugisha|first=Usher|author-link=Usher Komugisha|date=17 February 2015|title=CAF sets dates for CHAN 2016|url=http://www.supersport.com/football/africa/news/150217/Caf_sets_dates_for_Chan_2016|website=SuperSport|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150408063039/http://www.supersport.com/football/africa/news/150217/Caf_sets_dates_for_Chan_2016|archive-date=8 April 2015|access-date=28 February 2015}}

The defending champions Libya failed to qualify for this edition. It was the first edition which featured the semi-final stage consisting of the runners-up from all 4 groups and the last to be sponsored by Orange as French energy and petroleum giant Total was set to take over from the following edition onward.{{Cite web|date=21 July 2016|url=http://www.africanews.com/2016/07/21/total-to-sponsor-caf-competitions-for-the-next-eight-years/|title=Total to sponsor CAF competitions for the next eight years|website=Africanews|access-date=18 April 2018}}

{{anchor|Tiebreakers}}

;Tiebreakers

The teams were ranked according to points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss). If tied on points, tiebreakers would be applied in the following order:

  1. Number of points obtained in games between the teams concerned;
  2. Goal difference in games between the teams concerned;
  3. Goals scored in games between the teams concerned;
  4. If, after applying criteria 1 to 3 to several teams, two teams still have an equal ranking, criteria 1 to 3 are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the two teams in question to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 5 to 7 apply;
  5. Goal difference in all games;
  6. Goals scored in all games;
  7. Drawing of lots.

Knockout stage

In the knockout stage, if a match was level at the end of normal playing time, extra time would be played (two periods of 15 minutes each) and followed, if necessary, by kicks from the penalty mark to determine the winner, except for the third place match where no extra time would be played.
