On Monday, September 12, 2016, a leak in the Colonial Pipeline in Shelby County, Alabama, spilled an estimated 350,000 US gallons of summer-grade gasoline, requiring a partial shutdown of the pipeline, and causing gas shortages in much of the Southeastern United States. Six states are affected (Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia), with Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and Virginia declaring states of emergency.{{cite web |author=Posey |first=Melanie |date=September 14, 2016 |title=Colonial Pipeline: At least 42,000 gallons of gas leaked from line |url=http://www.wbrc.com/story/33088344/colonial-pipeline-at-least-350,000-gallons-of-gas-leaked-from-line |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160918011117/http://www.wbrc.com/story/33088344/colonial-pipeline-at-least-350,000-gallons-of-gas-leaked-from-line |archive-date=September 18, 2016 |access-date=September 20, 2016 |website=WBRC}} The same line suffered an explosion in late October at a site only miles distant.{{cite web |author=Kumar |first=Devika Krishna |date=November 1, 2016 |title=Colonial may open key U.S. gasoline line by Saturday after fatal blast |url=https://www.reuters.com/article/us-pipeline-blast-alabama-idUSKBN12V2FC |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231209094956/https://www.reuters.com/article/us-pipeline-blast-alabama-idUSKBN12V2FC/ |archive-date=December 9, 2023 |access-date=November 1, 2016 |website=Reuters}}
