Even if the cause of the accident is unknown, some sources said that it could have been a problem of brakes,{{Cite web|url=http://www.myjoyonline.com/news/2016/February-17th/dozens-feared-dead-in-kintampo-accident.php|title=53 people perish in accident on Tamale-Kintampo road|date=2016-02-17|website=Joy Online|accessdate=2017-07-24}} but speeding could also have been the cause. It seems the bus was overloaded, carrying more than the maximum of 63 passengers.
