The 2017 IIHF Women's World Championship Division I consisted of two international ice hockey tournaments organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation. Division I A and Division I B represent the second and third tier of the IIHF Women's World Championship.
At the 2017 IIHF annual congress it was decided that the Top Division would expand from eight to ten teams.{{cite web|url=https://www.iihfworlds2017.com/en/news/ww-grows/|title=Women's Worlds grow|date=19 May 2017|work=iihfworlds2017.com|access-date=19 May 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170522233158/https://www.iihfworlds2017.com/en/news/ww-grows|archive-date=22 May 2017|url-status=dead}} As a result, all relegations from the 2017 tournaments were cancelled, and there would also be no relegation in all 2018 tournaments.
