On 31 August 2017, policeman Ted Eriksson and his colleague patrolled the area around Medborgarplatsen and Björns trädgård in Stockholm in conjunction with a sit-in protest concerning deportation of Afghan migrants from Sweden. The perpetrator, who had previously taken part in the protest,{{Cite news|url=https://www.expressen.se/nyheter/17-aringen-uppfattades-som-en-konstig-figur/|title=17-åringen uppfattades som en "konstig figur"|work=Expressen|access-date=2018-04-05|language=sv}} unprovokedly stabbed Eriksson in the neck from behind, the seriousness of the attack didn't cause any fatal injuries despite the spinal cord was punctured and the vertebra was fractured.{{Cite news|url=http://sverigesradio.se/sida/artikel.aspx?programid=83&artikel=6768811|title=17-åringen begärs häktad för knivattack mot polis - Nyheter (Ekot)|last=Radio|first=Sveriges|newspaper=Sveriges Radio|date=2 September 2017|language=sv|access-date=2018-04-05}}{{Cite news|url=https://www.expressen.se/nyheter/brottscentralen/man-doms-for-mordforsok-pa-polisen-ted-eriksson/|title=Man döms för mordförsök på polisen Ted Eriksson|work=Expressen|access-date=2018-04-05|language=sv}}{{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/31/world/europe/stockholm-attack-police.html|title=Police Officer Is Injured in Knife Attack in Stockholm|last=Anderson|first=Christina|date=2017-08-31|work=The New York Times|access-date=2018-04-05|language=en-US|issn=0362-4331}}[https://polistidningen.se/2018/01/med-millimetrarna-pa-sin-sida/ Polis Tidningen] {{in lang|sv}}[https://www.instagram.com/p/BfZhFlYAMNK/ Instagram] {{in lang|sv}}
An Afghan asylum seeker named Muhammad Hussaini who had arrived during 2015 was arrested shortly thereafter by Eriksson's colleague on suspicion of attempted murder.{{Cite news|url=https://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/krim/a/kab6jB/knivhogg-polisen-ted--doms-till-fem-ars-fangelse|title=Knivhögg polisen Ted – döms till fem års fängelse|work=Aftonbladet|access-date=2018-04-05|language=sv}}{{Cite news|url=http://sverigesradio.se/sida/artikel.aspx?programid=83&artikel=6768811|title=17-åringen begärs häktad för knivattack mot polis - Nyheter (Ekot)|last=Radio|first=Sveriges|newspaper=Sveriges Radio|date=2 September 2017|website=|language=sv|archive-url=|archive-date=|access-date=2018-04-05}}
A forensic psychiatrist found that Muhammad Hussaini did not commit the attack affected by any psychiatric illness, as the perpetrator had hoped the attack was proof that he was mentally ill and therefore be more likely to receive a residence permit. Muhammad Hussaini had also hoped that psychiatric illness would lead to him being acquitted at the trial.
Muhammad Hussaini had applied for asylum as an unaccompanied minor while claiming to be 16 years old (born 17 December 1999) in December 2015, but crime investigators concluded his true age to be about 22–23 years old that he had faked his mental illness. The perpetrator's real age, 25 years old was found out by a journalist from Expressen days after the trial. [https://www.expressen.se/nyheter/polisen-ted-ar-valdigt-besviken-och-upprord/]
On 29 March 2018, Muhammad Hussaini was found guilty of attempted murder by the Stockholm District Court and sentenced to 5 years in prison with subsequent deportation.{{cite news|title=Fem års fängelse och utvisning för man som knivhögg polis|url=https://www.dn.se/sthlm/fem-ars-fangelse-och-utvisning-for-man-som-knivhogg-polis/|accessdate=5 April 2018|publisher=Dagens Nyheter|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20180329120229/https://www.dn.se/sthlm/fem-ars-fangelse-och-utvisning-for-man-som-knivhogg-polis/|archivedate=29 March 2018|language=sv}}{{Cite news|url=http://sverigesradio.se/sida/artikel.aspx?programid=103&artikel=6921191|title=Polisen Ted: Jag är nöjd att han döms för mordförsök - P4 Stockholm|last=Radio|first=Sveriges|newspaper=Sveriges Radio|date=29 March 2018|language=sv|access-date=2018-04-05}}{{Cite news|url=https://www.svt.se/nyheter/lokalt/stockholm/har-ar-domen-for-knivattacken-vid-medborgarplatsen|title=Man döms till fem års fängelse för knivattack på polis|last=Nyheter|first=SVT|date=2018-03-29|work=SVT Nyheter|access-date=2018-04-05|language=sv}} Policeman Eriksson was awarded 125 000 SEK in damages.[http://www.ystadsallehanda.se/ystad/hojt-skadestand-till-ted-eriksson-fangelsedomen-star-dock-fast/] The Afghan was also found guilty of two counts of assault at a secondary schools a few days before the Medborgarplatsen attack.
