Due to ongoing concerns with the COVID-19 pandemic, officials announced that, initially, the tournament would only be played in front of essential tournament personnel, limited school administrators and student-athlete guests, broadcast television, and credentialed media members present, starting with the quarterfinals; however, shortly before the tipoff of the quarterfinal matchup between Florida State and Clemson, the ACC announced the tournament was canceled and Florida State, the regular season champions, would receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.{{cite web |last1=Carter |first1=Andrew |title=ACC tournament will keep fans out of its remaining games amid coronavirus outbreak |url=https://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/acc/article241105201.html|website=newsobserver.com |publisher=News and Observer |accessdate=12 March 2020}}{{cite web |title=Statement from ACC on Men's Basketball Tournament |url=https://theacc.com/news/2020/3/12/statement-from-acc-on-mens-basketball-tournament.aspx |website=theacc.com |publisher=Atlantic Coast Conference |accessdate=12 March 2020}}

To earn "consensus" status, a player must win honors based on a point system computed from the four different all-America teams. The point system consists of three points for first team, two points for second team and one point for third team. No honorable mention or fourth team or lower are used in the computation. The top five totals plus ties are first team and the next five plus ties are second team.{{cite web |url=https://www.ncaa.org/wps/portal/ncaahome?WCM_GLOBAL_CONTEXT=/ncaa/ncaa/sports+and+championship/general+information/stats/statistics+policies |title=2009–10 NCAA Statistics Policies (updated 9/2/2009) |publisher=National Collegiate Athletic Association |date=September 2, 2009 |accessdate=February 20, 2014 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20100612225534/http://ncaa.org/wps/portal/ncaahome?WCM_GLOBAL_CONTEXT=/ncaa/ncaa/sports+and+championship/general+information/stats/statistics+policies |archivedate=June 12, 2010 |url-status=dead |df=mdy }}
