In the 2018–19 season, Liverpool and Manchester City were in a heated title race, each going unbeaten in their first 15 league matches, and never more than three points apart in the table after the end of February.{{cite web |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48152845 |title=Premier League title: The tiny margins that divided Man City and Liverpool |last=Rostance |first=Tom |date=12 May 2019 |publisher=BBC Sport }} Despite being nine points behind Liverpool at Christmas, Manchester City won the league with 98 points, a point ahead of Liverpool.{{cite web |url=https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/may/12/manchester-city-liverpool-premier-league-title |title=Manchester City pip Liverpool to title with crushing win at Brighton |last=Fifield |first=Dominic |date=12 May 2019 |work=The Guardian }} Manchester City also won the 2018–19 FA Cup and the 2018–19 EFL Cup, beating Watford 6–0 in the former,{{cite web |url=https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/18/football/fa-cup-final-manchester-city-watford-spt-intl/index.html |title=Manchester City makes history with victory in FA Cup final |date=18 May 2019 |publisher=CNN }} and defeating Chelsea 4–3 in a penalty shoot-out after a 0–0 draw in 2019 EFL Cup Final.{{cite web |url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2019/02/24/chelsea-vs-manchester-city-carabao-cup-final-2019-live-score/ |title=Manchester City take the honours after Kepa Arrizabalaga antics overshadow otherwise drab League Cup final |last=Burt |first=Jason |date=25 February 2019 |work=The Daily Telegraph }}

During 2018–19 the two teams only met in the league, playing out a goalless draw at Anfield on 24 October, as City's Riyad Mahrez missed a crucial penalty kick in the 84th minute,{{cite web |url=https://www.nbcsports.com/video/man-citys-riyad-mahrez-misses-penalty-kick-v-liverpool |title=Mahrez misses penalty kick with horrible attempt |date=7 October 2018 |publisher=NBC Sports |access-date=3 August 2019}} before Manchester City won 2–1 at the City of Manchester Stadium on 3 January, with goals from Sergio Agüero and Leroy Sané for City either side of Roberto Firmino's effort for Liverpool.{{cite news |first=Phil |last=McNulty |title=Manchester City 2-76 Liverpool: Champions narrow gap on leaders to four points |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/46690612 |publisher=BBC Sport |date=3 January 2019 |access-date=7 August 2019}} That game was Liverpool's only loss during the 2018–19 Premier League season.

This is the third super cup in which Liverpool's Jürgen Klopp and Manchester City's Pep Guardiola have faced each other. While they were each managing Der Klassiker rivals Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich respectively, they played against each other in the 2013 and 2014 DFL-Supercups, the German equivalent of the Community Shield. Klopp's side won on both occasions, with scores of 4–2 and 2–0 respectively.{{Cite web|url=https://www.dfb.de/supercup/spielplan/?spieledb_path=%2Fmatches%2F1753169|title=Deutscher Supercup, 2013, Finale|date=27 July 2013|publisher=German Football Association|language=de}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.dfb.de/supercup/spielplan/?spieledb_path=%2Fmatches%2F2208220|title=Deutscher Supercup, 2014, Finale|date=13 August 2014|publisher=German Football Association}} Both matches were played at Westfalenstadion, Dortmund's home stadium.

= Summary =

Manchester City took the lead after 12 minutes when Kevin De Bruyne knocked the ball into the penalty area from the left to David Silva who flicked it to Raheem Sterling who scored from six yards out, hitting the ball with his left foot under Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson who almost managed to keep it out of the net. In the second half Virgil van Dijk had a shot from close range on the turn which came back off the underside of the bar and bounced out to safety. Liverpool equalized in the 77th minute when Joël Matip scored with a header from three yards out after a cross from the left by Virgil van Dijk.{{cite web|url= https://www.bbc.com/sport/live/football/48968112|title = Liverpool 1 Man City 1 (Man city win 5-4 on penalties): Live|date=4 August 2019|work=BBC Sport|access-date=13 August 2019}}

Mohamed Salah had a late chance to win the game but his initial shot was saved by Claudio Bravo with Salah following up with a header which was hooked off the line by Kyle Walker. The match went to a penalty shoot-out with Georginio Wijnaldum the only player to miss, Claudio Bravo saving to his right. Gabriel Jesus scored the winning penalty shooting to the left past Alisson to decide the match.{{cite web|url= https://www.theguardian.com/football/live/2019/aug/04/liverpool-v-manchester-city-community-shield-live|title = Liverpool 1 Man City 1 (Man city win 5-4 on penalties): as it happened|date=4 August 2019|work=Guardian|access-date=13 August 2019}}
