The club only participated in the A-League after the 2020 FFA Cup was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia.{{Cite web|title=Coronavirus forces FFA Cup to be cancelled|url=https://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/coronavirus-forces-ffa-cup-to-be-cancelled|date=7 July 2020|publisher=SBS|work=The World Game}}
Western United finished tenth in their A-League season, forcing them to play in an FFA Cup play-off in the 2021–22 season.
