Parliamentary elections were held in Cape Verde on 18 April 2021.

Background

The incumbent prime minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva of the Christian democratic Movement for Democracy (MpD) party, sought reelection after five years of government.[https://news.yahoo.com/opposition-returns-power-cape-verde-15-years-010219999.html "Opposition returns to power in Cape Verde after 15 years"] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201112202222/https://news.yahoo.com/opposition-returns-power-cape-verde-15-years-010219999.html|date=12 November 2020}}, Agence France-Presse, 20 March 2016. His main contender was Janira Hopffer Almada, of the moderate socialist African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), who would become the first woman to reach the office of Prime Minister if elected.{{Cite web|date=2020-06-23|title=Cabo Verde Parliamentary Elections: April 18, 2021 and Presidential Election: October 17, 2021|url=https://21votes.com/cabo-verde-elections/|access-date=2021-04-13|website=21votes|language=en-US}}

The two parties have been the dominant political forces in Cape Verde since its democratization, but several newer parties are taking part in the election.{{Cite web|date=2021-04-13|title=Traditional parties face upset by newcomers in Cape Verde|url=https://www.africanews.com/2021/04/13/traditional-parties-face-upset-by-newcomers-in-cape-verde/|access-date=2021-04-13|website=Africanews|language=en}}
