Unlike the last three seasons, the final of this edition was played in a two-legged format as per the decision of CAF at the executive committee meeting on July 3 at Rabat, arising from a formal complaint made by Al Ahly to CAF over the choice of Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca as the venue for the 2022 final: despite the intention that the final be played at a neutral venue, the 2022 tournament culminated with the stadium being the home venue of their opponent, Wydad AC.{{Cite web |last=Sang |first=Kiplagat |date=2022-05-12 |title=Caf Champions League final: Morocco venue choice explained after Mosimane and Al Ahly protests {{!}} Goal.com US |url=https://www.goal.com/en-us/news/caf-champions-league-final-morocco-venue-choice-explained-after-mosimane-and-al-ahly-protests/blt87bda11529642018 |access-date=2023-11-16 |website=www.goal.com |language=en-US}}{{Cite web |last=Mabuka |first=Dennis |date=2022-05-11 |title=Al Ahly lodges complaint with Cas over Caf Champions League final venue {{!}} Goal.com |url=https://www.goal.com/en/news/al-ahly-lodges-complaint-with-cas-over-caf-champions-league-final-venue/bltd65533c16cfe56aa |access-date=2023-11-16 |website=www.goal.com |language=en}}{{Cite news |title=Al Ahly appeal to Cas about Champions League final |language=en-GB |work=BBC Sport |url=https://www.bbc.com/sport/africa/61407670 |access-date=2023-11-16}}{{Cite web|date=2022-05-26 |title=CAS Rejects Al Ahly’s Appeal to Postpone CAF Champions League Final |url=https://moneycentral.com.ng/sport/article/cas-rejects-al-ahlys-appeal-to-postpone-caf-champions-league-final/ |access-date=2023-11-16 |website=Moneycentral |language=en-US}}{{Cite web |last=Kwakofi |first=Edwin |date=2022-07-14 |title=CAF Champions League final to return to two-legged format next year |url=https://citisportsonline.com/2022/07/14/caf-champions-league-final-to-return-to-two-legged-format-next-year/ |access-date=2023-11-16 |website=Citi Sports Online |language=en-US}}{{Cite web |title=CAF President Dr Motsepe announces African Super League launch details, AFCON 2023 and Champions League key decisions |url=https://www.webwire.com/ViewPressRel.asp?aId=291242 |access-date=2023-11-16 |website=WebWire}}

Wydad AC were the defending champions, but they lost the final against Al Ahly.

Association team allocation

A total of 46 out of the 56 CAF member associations entered this season's CAF Champions League, with the 12 highest ranked associations according to their CAF 5-year ranking eligible to enter two teams in this season. As a result, theoretically a maximum of 68 teams could enter the tournament – although this level has never been reached.

For this season of the tournament, CAF used the 2018–2022 CAF 5-year ranking, which calculates points for each entrant association based on their clubs’ performance over those 5 years in CAF club competitions. The criteria for points are as follows:{{cite web|date=11 May 2016|url=http://www.cafonline.com/en-US/NewsCenter/News/NewsDetails?id=opWmel0tn8fFZ%2BLvtpSmDg%3D%3D|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161106152900/http://www.cafonline.com/en-US/NewsCenter/News/NewsDetails?id=opWmel0tn8fFZ%2BLvtpSmDg%3D%3D|archive-date=6 November 2016|title=16 Clubs for Group Phase of CC and CL effective 2017|website=CAFOnline.com|access-date=11 July 2017}}{{cite web|date=30 May 2016|url=http://www.cafonline.com/en-US/NewsCenter/News/NewsDetails?id=u%2bmEgBjJrRZliS8M%2byAGGQ%3d%3d|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161106152745/http://www.cafonline.com/en-US/NewsCenter/News/NewsDetails?id=u%2bmEgBjJrRZliS8M%2byAGGQ%3d%3d|archive-date=6 November 2016|title=New adopted format for Club Competitions|website=CAFOnline.com|access-date=13 May 2017}}{{cite web|date=9 June 2011|title=CAF disowns club ranking published by some websites|url=http://www.cafonline.com/football/news/10006-caf-disowns-club-ranking-published-by-some-websites.html|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110611081352/http://www.cafonline.com/football/news/10006-caf-disowns-club-ranking-published-by-some-websites.html|archive-date=11 June 2011|website=CAFOnline.com|access-date=14 December 2011}}
