The 2022 AFL season was the 126th season of the Australian Football League (AFL), the highest-level senior men's Australian rules football competition in Australia, which was known as the Victorian Football League until 1989. The season featured eighteen clubs and ran from 16 March until 24 September, comprising a 22-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top eight clubs.

The premiership was won by the Geelong Football Club for the tenth time, after defeating {{AFL Syd}} by 81 points in the 2022 AFL Grand Final.

Background

The 2022 season was played during the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic and was the last season to be directly impacted by it. At the start of the season, the roll-out of Australia's vaccination program was almost complete with 95% of adults vaccinated to a two-dose standard and about 50% having received a booster;{{cite web|url=https://www.health.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/2022/03/covid-19-vaccine-rollout-update-10-march-2022.pdf|date=10 March 2022|access-date=12 March 2022|title=COVID-19 Vaccine Roll-out|publisher=Australian Government}} and across all states except for Western Australia, practically all social and interstate travel restrictions which had been in place through the latter half of 2021 had been lifted;{{Cite news|author=Ben Westcott and Caitlin McGee|title=Australia moves to lift Covid-19 restrictions amid surge in Omicron infections|url=https://www.cnn.com/2021/12/14/australia/australia-omicron-covid-outbreak-restrictions-intl-hnk/index.html|access-date=2022-01-04|website=CNN|date=15 December 2021 }} Western Australia maintained some restrictions into the start of the season.{{cite web|url=https://www.wa.gov.au/government/covid-19-coronavirus/covid-19-coronavirus-what-you-can-and-cant-do|title=Public health and social measures in affected areas|date=6 March 2022|access-date=12 March 2022|publisher=Western Australian government}} Cases of the virus, particularly the Omicron variant which became dominant in December 2021, were widespread in the community for the first time in the pandemic; and confirmed cases and their close contacts were still required to test and isolate, although for shorter periods than earlier in the pandemic.{{Cite web|date=2021-12-31|title=Australia's Covid surge in four charts: NSW now has one of world's highest infection rates|url=https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/datablog/2021/dec/31/australias-covid-surge-in-four-charts-nsw-now-has-one-of-worlds-highest-infection-rates|access-date=2022-01-04|website=the Guardian|language=en}}

The main impacts of the pandemic to the AFL season were:

  • The league implemented a vaccination policy requiring all players and football department staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19;{{cite web|title=NO JAB, NO PLAY: AFL releases vaccination policy|date=21 October 2021|access-date=15 January 2021|author=Damian Barrett|url=https://www.afl.com.au/news/685424/no-jab-no-play-afl-releases-covid-19-vaccination-policy|publisher=Australian Football League}} equivalent requirements were implemented by some state governments.{{cite web|url=https://coronavirus.fairwork.gov.au/coronavirus-and-australian-workplace-laws/covid-19-vaccinations-and-the-workplace/covid-19-vaccinations-legislation-and-public-health-orders|title=COVID-19 vaccinations: legislation and public health orders|date=14 January 2022|access-date=15 January 2022|publisher=Fair Work Ombudsman}} Two players – Liam Jones ({{AFL Car}}) and Cam Ellis-Yolmen ({{AFL BL}}) – resigned as a result of the mandate.{{Cite web|last=Niall|first=Jake|date=2022-01-24|title=Brisbane Lion becomes AFL's second anti-vax player to lose list spot|url=https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/brisbane-lion-becomes-afl-s-second-anti-vax-player-to-lose-list-spot-20220124-p59qwl.html|access-date=2022-01-24|website=The Age|language=en}} The AFL's mandate was lifted in July, on a similar timeline to those of the state governments.{{cite web|url=https://www.afl.com.au/news/798874/play-on-afl-vaccine-mandate-lifted-for-players-and-staff|title=Play on: Vaccine mandate lifted for players and staff|date=14 July 2022|access-date=23 July 2022|author=Josh Gabelich|publisher=Australian Football League}}
  • A player top-up list and policy was put in place to cover the event of a substantial portion of a team being forced into isolation.
