Route to the final
The DFB-Pokal began with 64 teams in a single-elimination knockout cup competition. There were a total of five rounds leading up to the final. If the score was still level, a penalty shoot-out was used to determine the winner.{{cite web |url=https://www.dfb.de/dfb-pokal/modus/ |title=Modus |trans-title=Mode |website=DFB.de |publisher=German Football Association |date=15 August 2012 |access-date=11 June 2015 |language=de}}
