No SDHL teams were relegated at the end of the 2022–23 SDHL season due to Göteborg HC's mid-season withdrawal from the league in November 2022. The nine teams that completed the 2022–23 season returned for the 2023–24 season and were joined by Frölunda HC, the Nationella Damhockeyligan (NDHL) champions of the 2023 {{Lang|sv|Kvalserie till SDHL}}. The promotion of Frölunda HC brought the number of teams participating in the league back to ten.{{cite news |last=Ekerlid |first=Erik |date=2022-11-02 |title=Göteborg HC drar sig ur SDHL |url=https://www.svt.se/sport/ishockey/goteborg-hc-drar-sig-ur-sdhl |accessdate=2023-03-20 |work=SVT Sport |language=sv}}{{cite news |last1=Karlsson |first1=Mattias |date=2022-11-02 |title=Drar sig ur SDHL – mitt under säsongen |url=https://www.aftonbladet.se/sportbladet/hockey/a/O8oaWk/ishockey-goteborg-hc-drar-sig-ur-sdhl-mitt-i-sasongen |access-date=2023-03-20 |work=Aftonbladet |language=sv}}

The season marks the first time in league history that fewer than sixty percent of active players are of Swedish nationality. Import players hail from fifteen different countries, with the largest contingents coming from Canada (20 players), Czechia (19 players), and Finland (19 players).{{Cite web |title=SDHL (W) 2023-2024 Regular Season Player/Goaltending Stats (Nation=Imports) |url=https://www.eliteprospects.com/league/sdhl-w/stats/2023-2024?nation=-swe |access-date=2023-12-31 |website=Elite Prospects |language=en}}

In contrast to the rising number of import players, the number of Swedish captains increased from two in the 2022–23 season to five at the start of the 2023–24 season – with AIK, Brynäs IF, Frölunda HC, Linköping HC, and MoDo Hockey all sporting Swedish captains. The remaining five captaincies were filled by two Canadians (Djurgårdens IF and Leksands IF), two Finns (HV71 and Luleå HF/MSSK), and one Netherlander (SDE HF).

Alternate captain Michelle Karvinen stepped into the Frölunda HC captaincy on an interim basis after captain Hanna Olsson sustained a season-ending hamstring injury caused by a blindsided open-ice hit from Luleå forward Petra Nieminen on 13 October 2023.{{cite news |last1=Kennedy |first1=Ian |title=Sweden's Top Forward Hanna Olsson Out For The Season Following Crushing Hit |url=https://thehockeynews.com/womens/international/swedens-top-forward-hanna-olsson-out-for-the-season-following-crushing-hit |access-date=31 December 2023 |work=The Hockey News |date=20 October 2023 |language=en}}{{cite news |last1=Foster |first1=Meredith |title=Hanna Olsson Out for Season |url=https://www.theicegarden.com/hanna-olsson-out-for-season/ |access-date=31 December 2023 |work=The Ice Garden |date=19 October 2023 |language=en}} HV71's captain, Sanni Hakala, ended her ice hockey career on 30 November 2023 due to injuries sustained in a match earlier in the month;{{cite web |last1=Galic |first1=Toni |title=Sanni Hakala fortsätter som kapten i damlaget |url=https://www.hv71.se/article/gf3as09-3iaijd/view |website=HV71 |access-date=2023-12-31 |language=sv |type=Video |date=2023-08-31}}{{Cite news |last=Niemistö |first=Juho |date=2023-11-30 |title=Sanni Hakala kertoo halvaantuneensa |url=https://www.is.fi/jaakiekko/art-2000010028482.html |access-date=2023-11-30 |work=Ilta-Sanomat |language=fi}} HV71 alternate captain Elin Svensson was named captain shortly thereafter.{{cite news |last1=Petersson |first1=Felix |title=Vännen och nya HV-kaptenen: ”Det är samma Sanni kvar” |url=https://sverigesradio.se/artikel/vannen-och-nya-hv-kaptenen-det-ar-samma-sanni-kvar |access-date=31 December 2023 |work=Sveriges Radio |type=Radio broadcast |date=7 December 2023 |language=sv}}
