Previous season

The Red Raiders finished the 2022–23 season 16–16, 5–13 in Big 12 play to finish in a tie for last place. As the No. 9 seed the Big 12 tournament, they lost to West Virginia in the first round.

The day after the Red Raiders' final regular season game, Mark Adams was suspended for what the school called an "inappropriate, unacceptable, and racially insensitive comment" that he had made the previous week.{{cite web |date=2023-03-05 |title=Texas Tech announces suspension of Mark Adams |url=https://texastech.com/news/2023/3/5/mens-basketball-texas-tech-announces-suspension-of-mark-adams.aspx |access-date=2024-04-03 |website=TexasTech.com}} On March 8, 2023, Adams resigned.{{Cite web |last=Skretta |first=Dave |date=2023-03-09 |title=Texas Tech Coach Mark Adams Resigns After Suspension for Racially Insensitive Comments |url=https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/sports/texas-tech-coach-mark-adams-resigns-after-suspension-for-racially-insensitive-comments/3210482/ |access-date=2023-04-04 |website=NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth |language=en-US}} On March 31, the school named North Texas head coach Grant McCasland the team's new head coach.{{Cite web |date=2023-03-31 |agency=The Associated Press |title=Texas Tech hires UNT's McCasland as new coach |url=https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/36018563 |access-date=2023-04-04 |website=ESPN.com |language=en}}
