The 2023 Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council election took place on 4 May 2023 to elect all 56 members of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, a unitary authority which straddles the ceremonial counties of County Durham and North Yorkshire in England. This was on the same day as other local elections across England.{{Cite web |date=2023-05-05 |title=Stockton-on-Tees council's local election results 2023 as political control hangs in the balance |url=https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/politics/stockton-on-tees-council-local-election-results-2023-4102487 |access-date=2023-05-07 |website=Yorkshire Post |language=en}}
The council remained under no overall control after the election, being led by a Labour minority administration.
Overview
Prior to the election the council was under no overall control with Labour the largest party.{{cite web |title=Find my Councillor |url=https://www.stockton.gov.uk/Find-my-Councillor |website=Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council |access-date=30 May 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230312003517/https://www.stockton.gov.uk/Find-my-Councillor |archive-date=12 March 2023}}
New ward boundaries were drawn up for the election by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England. The overall number of councillors stayed the same at 56.{{cite legislation UK|type=si|si=The Stockton-on-Tees (Electoral Changes) Order 2022|year=2022|number=966|access-date=30 May 2023}}

The council remained under no overall control after the election but the Conservatives overtook Labour to become the largest party, in a result which went against the national trend for the 2023 elections.{{Cite web |title=North East council remains with no overall control despite big wins for Conservatives |url=https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/23500909.stockton-council-remain-no-overall-control-despite-gains/ |access-date=2023-05-07 |website=The Northern Echo |date=5 May 2023 |language=en}}{{Cite web |last=Lightfoot |first=Gareth |date=2023-05-05 |title=Conservatives hail Stockton gains but no one has overall control |url=https://www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/teesside-news/conservatives-hail-gains-current-largest-26851226 |access-date=2023-05-07 |website=TeessideLive |language=en}}
At the annual council meeting on 24 May 2023 following the election, the two small parties of the Thornaby Independent Association and the Ingleby Barwick Independent Society voted with Labour to allow the minority Labour administration led by Bob Cook to continue to run the council.{{cite news |last1=Lightfoot |first1=Gareth |title="We're not in Labour's pocket": Independents respond to criticism after backing council leader |url=https://www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/teesside-news/were-not-labours-pocket-independents-26985973 |access-date=30 May 2023 |work=Teesside Live |date=25 May 2023}}
