The 2023 United Auto Workers strike was a labor strike involving automobile workers in the labor union United Auto Workers (UAW) and the three unionized automakers in the United States—Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Stellantis. These three automakers' factories combined employ about 145,000 UAW members and produce about 50 percent of the vehicles manufactured annually in the US, accounting for 1.5 percent of US GDP.{{cite news | url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2023/09/15/uaw-strike-average-workers-wages/ | title=How much do UAW workers make? It was the first trilateral strike against the three automakers in the union's history.
The hardline stance taken by the newly elected UAW president Shawn Fain contributed to the UAW's decision to strike. In particular, he has criticized stagnant wages that do not account for inflation and has called for the end of a tiered employment system that underpays newer employees, the restoration of overtime and retirement benefits that were lost due to the 2008 financial crisis, the institution of a four-day workweek, and improved worker protections against plant closures as electric vehicle production increases.
A central concern for the automakers is the cost of labor relative to domestic and foreign non-union competitors, particularly as the industry transitions to electric vehicle manufacturing.{{Cite news |last=Higgins |first=Tim |date=2023-09-16 |title=Whatever the UAW Strike Outcome, Elon Musk Has Already Won |language=en-US |work=The Wall Street Journal |url=https://www.wsj.com/business/autos/uaw-strike-tesla-labor-costs-baf8b897 |url-status=live |access-date=2023-09-19 |archive-date=September 18, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230918160055/https://www.wsj.com/business/autos/uaw-strike-tesla-labor-costs-baf8b897 }} The automakers have stated that they anticipate the need to invest a significant portion of their profits from gasoline-powered vehicles into new production technology for electric vehicles.
The strike was suspended in the last week of October as the automakers made tentative deals that largely matched the UAW demands, starting with Ford on October 25, followed by Stellantis on October 28 and finally General Motors on October 30.{{Cite web |date=2023-10-25 |title=UAW Reaches Tentative Agreement on Record Contract with Ford Motor Company |url=https://uaw.org/uaw-reaches-tentative-agreement-record-contract-ford-motor-company/ |access-date=2023-11-06 |website=UAW |language=en-US |archive-date=November 6, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231106023820/https://uaw.org/uaw-reaches-tentative-agreement-record-contract-ford-motor-company/ |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |date=2023-10-28 |title=UAW Reaches a Tentative Agreement with Stellantis |url=https://uaw.org/uaw-reaches-tentative-agreement-stellantis/ |access-date=2023-11-06 |website=UAW |language=en-US |archive-date=November 6, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231106023822/https://uaw.org/uaw-reaches-tentative-agreement-stellantis/ |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |date=2023-10-30 |title=UAW Reaches a Tentative Agreement with General Motors, Bringing Ultium Cells Workers Into Master Agreement |url=https://uaw.org/uaw-reaches-tentative-agreement-general-motors-bringing-ultium-cells-workers-master-agreement/ |access-date=2023-11-06 |website=UAW |language=en-US |archive-date=November 6, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231106023820/https://uaw.org/uaw-reaches-tentative-agreement-general-motors-bringing-ultium-cells-workers-master-agreement/ |url-status=live }} In announcing the deals with the automakers, UAW instructed workers to return to the job, thus ending the 46-day labor strike on October 30.{{Cite news |date=2023-10-31 |title=UAW reaches deal with GM, ends coordinated strikes against Detroit automakers |language=en |work=Reuters |url=https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/uaw-reaches-deal-with-gm-ends-coordinated-strikes-against-detroit-automakers-2023-10-30/ |access-date=2023-11-06 |archive-date=November 6, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231106023818/https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/uaw-reaches-deal-with-gm-ends-coordinated-strikes-against-detroit-automakers-2023-10-30/ |url-status=live }} The new contracts would be ratified when individual UAW membership voting with all three companies ended November 16–17, 2023.{{cite news|url=https://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/general-motors/2023/11/16/gm-uaw-ratify-contract-vote-general-motors/71605611007/|title=GM UAW members ratify contract after 54.7% approval in vote|first=Jamie L.|last=LaReau|publisher=Detroit Free Press|date=2023-11-16|accessdate=2023-11-18|archive-date=November 18, 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231118162551/https://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/general-motors/2023/11/16/gm-uaw-ratify-contract-vote-general-motors/71605611007/|url-status=live}}{{cite news|url=https://www.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/chrysler/2023/11/17/stellantis-uaw-tentative-agreement-ratification/71617800007/|title=Stellantis-UAW deal has enough votes to ratify|first1=Breana|last1=Noble|first2=Kalea|last2=Hall|first3=Hayley|last3=Harding|publisher=Detroit Free Press|date=2023-11-17|access-date=November 18, 2023|archive-date=November 18, 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231118170945/https://www.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/chrysler/2023/11/17/stellantis-uaw-tentative-agreement-ratification/71617800007/|url-status=live}}{{cite news|url=https://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/ford/2023/11/17/ford-workers-ratify-2023-uaw-contract-with-69-3-support/71616990007/|title=Ford workers ratify historic 2023 UAW contract with 69.3% support for wage hikes, benefits|first=Phoebe|last=Hall|publisher=Detroit Free Press|date=2023-11-17|accessdate=2023-11-17|archive-date=November 18, 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231118112220/https://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/ford/2023/11/17/ford-workers-ratify-2023-uaw-contract-with-69-3-support/71616990007/|url-status=live}}
Background
=United Auto Workers=
{{Main|United Auto Workers}}
The labor union United Auto Workers (UAW) represents approximately 145,000 automobile workers employed at Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Stellantis.{{Cite web |url=https://www.cnn.com/2023/09/11/business/auto-workers-strike-fain-tapper/index.html |title=UAW president says auto strike would hurt mostly 'billionaire class' |date=September 11, 2023 |last=Isidore |first=Chris |publisher=CNN |access-date=September 13, 2023 |archive-date=September 12, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230912215815/https://www.cnn.com/2023/09/11/business/auto-workers-strike-fain-tapper/index.html |url-status=live }} To achieve its goals, UAW has engaged in strike action; from November 1945 to March 1946, UAW went on strike against General Motors. The 1945—1946 strike established a strategy, forged by then-UAW president Walter Reuther, to target efforts on a single company. Since the 1950s, UAW has faced declining union membership and a growing service sector, reducing the economic impact that a strike could have.{{Cite web |url=https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2023-09-13/column-why-an-auto-workers-strike-should-have-your-support |title=Why an auto workers strike should have your support |date=September 13, 2023 |last=Hiltzik |first=Michael |work=Los Angeles Times |access-date=September 13, 2023 |archive-date=September 14, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230914035955/https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2023-09-13/column-why-an-auto-workers-strike-should-have-your-support |url-status=live }} In 2019, UAW autoworkers went on strike against General Motors. =Contract negotiations=
In March 2023, newly elected UAW president Shawn Fain stated that workers were "fed up with the status quo" and assured that he would negotiate for changes to workers' contracts. Fain called for cost of living adjustments to account for inflation ahead of the current contracts expiring on September 14 and asked for wage increases lost in the 2008 financial crisis.{{Cite web |url=https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-auto-union-leader-promises-fight-get-workers-fair-share-2023-03-27/ |title=New UAW leader tells automakers: 'Our membership is fed up' |date=March 27, 2023 |last1=White |first1=Joseph |last2=Shepardson |first2=David |publisher=Reuters |access-date=September 13, 2023 |archive-date=August 22, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230822032911/https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-auto-union-leader-promises-fight-get-workers-fair-share-2023-03-27/ |url-status=live }} Members have expressed interest in both ending a two-tier wage system in which newer employees are paid significantly less than older employees, and domestic plant construction.{{Cite web |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/27/business/united-auto-workers-shawn-fain.html |title=United Auto Workers Usher In New Era of Leadership |date=March 27, 2023 |last=Boudette |first=Neal |work=The New York Times |access-date=September 13, 2023 |archive-date=September 12, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230912224237/https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/27/business/united-auto-workers-shawn-fain.html |url-status=live }} Fain continued his sentiments at the Automotive Press Association in April, expressing disappointment in the idling of the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Belvidere, Illinois.{{Cite web |url=https://apnews.com/article/uaw-shawn-fain-president-strike-detroit-159a2745faf1f88e330c2ae94408dfa3 |title=New UAW leader already has issues with Detroit automakers |date=April 21, 2023 |last=Krisher |first=Tom |publisher=Associated Press |access-date=September 13, 2023 |archive-date=July 31, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230731052931/https://apnews.com/article/uaw-shawn-fain-president-strike-detroit-159a2745faf1f88e330c2ae94408dfa3 |url-status=live }} Additionally, he lambasted wage decreases that workers at joint venture battery factories face compared to workers at older factories.{{Cite web |url=https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/uaw-president-no-excuse-detroits-non-union-ev-operations-2023-04-21/ |title=UAW President: 'No excuse' for Detroit's non-union EV operations |date=April 21, 2023 |last=White |first=Joseph |publisher=Reuters |access-date=September 13, 2023 |archive-date=September 1, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230901085145/https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/uaw-president-no-excuse-detroits-non-union-ev-operations-2023-04-21/ |url-status=live }}

In an opinion article, Steven Rattner, who served on Barack Obama's Presidential Task Force on the Auto Industry during the government's restructuring of GM and Chrysler (predecessor of Stellantis) associated with their 2008 bankruptcies, stated that while he feels that the auto workers should get raises, they are asking for too much from an industry with thin profit margins that has stagnated relative to the growth of the overall economy.{{cite news | url=https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/20/opinion/uaw-strike-economy-biden.html | title=The United Auto Workers Is Overplaying Its Hand, Risking Our Economy and the Election | last=Rattner | first=Steven | author-link=Steven Rattner | newspaper=The New York Times | date=2023-09-20 | quote=Yes, profits at the Detroit Three are at record levels – $37 billion last year.
