On July 26, 2024, SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) initiated a labor strike involving the union’s voice actors and motion capture artists against American video game companies signed to the union’s Interactive Media Agreements over failed renegotiation terms of the contract that had expired in November 2022.{{cite news |date=July 26, 2024 |title=SAG-AFTRA Members Who Work on Video Games Go on Strike; A.I. Background

With significant advances in generative AI in the early 2020s, game developers have seen potential to reduce labor costs and increase productivity by substituting AI for human performers.{{Cite web |last=Marr |first=Bernard |date=April 18, 2024 |title=The Role Of Generative AI In Video Game Development |url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/bernardmarr/2024/04/18/the-role-of-generative-ai-in-video-game-development/ |access-date=September 21, 2024 |website=Forbes |language=en-US |archive-date=September 21, 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240921205403/https://www.forbes.com/sites/bernardmarr/2024/04/18/the-role-of-generative-ai-in-video-game-development/ |url-status=live }} Additionally, mass layoffs in the video game industry from 2023 onwards have led to concerns about the future sustainability of game development, as this led to the cancellation of several game projects and shutdown of several studios. AI has been explored as one solution to mitigate the rising development costs of games, including costs associated with hiring voice-over and motion capture actors. According to sources, motion capture studios may charge $500-$2000 per hour,{{Cite web |last=Marr |first=Bernard |date=October 12, 2023 |title=Is Motion Capture Expensive? SAG-AFTRA introduced two new special contracts in March 2025, one for student-developed games, and another for games developed as part of game jams. Both allow union voice actors to participate in these games with reduced or waived fees, and only if the released game generates revenue, the union would work with developers to establish a royalty schedule.{{cite web | url = https://www.eurogamer.net/sag-aftra-firms-up-support-for-student-devs-and-game-jam-participants | title = SAG-AFTRA firms up support for student devs and game jam participants | first = Vikki | last = Blake | date = March 30, 2025 | accessdate = March 30, 2025 | work = Eurogamer }}
