Although the United States Virgin Islands will not participate in the 2024 presidential general election because it is a U.S. territory and not a state, it equally participated in the U.S. presidential caucuses and primaries. The caucus took place the same day as the Nevada caucuses.{{Cite web|url=https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/us/elections/republican-primary-calendar.html|title=2024 Republican Presidential Primary Calendar|date=December 6, 2023|first1=Martín|last1=González Gómez|first2=Christine|last2=Zhang|work=The New York Times}}
The caucus was won by former President Donald Trump, defeating former U.N. Ambassador and South Carolina governor Nikki Haley. Trump won with 187 votes{{Failed verification|date=February 2024}}, winning all of the territory's convention delegates.{{Cite web |title=Trump wins US Virgin Islands caucuses, extending Haley's losing streak|url=https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/2024-us-virgin-islands-caucus-results/story?id=106645550 |access-date=February 12, 2024|date=February 8, 2024|website=ABC News |language=en|first1=Nadine|last1=El-Bawab|first2=Oren|last2=Oppenheim}} The Republican Party in the Virgin Islands selected nine delegates{{Failed verification|date=February 2024}}, although the number of delegates seated by the convention may be reduced to as few as four due to alleged violations of national Republican rules.{{Cite web |title=The U.S. Virgin Islands is this week's most interesting election|url=https://abcnews.go.com/538/us-virgin-islands-weeks-interesting-election/story?id=107038823 |access-date=February 13, 2024|date=February 8, 2024|website=ABC News |language=en|first=Nathaniel|last=Rakich}}
Procedure
Under RNC Rule No. 16(c)(2), any caucus held prior to March 15 must allocate its delegates proportionally to the number of votes for each candidate.{{cite web|url=https://prod-static.gop.com/media/Rules_of_the_Republican_Party_090921.pdf|title=The Rules of the Republican Party|publisher=Republican National Convention|year=2020}} The RNC alleged that using ranked-choice voting before March 15, 2024, was a violation of RNC rules.
Controversy
The number of delegates for the U.S. Virgin Islands may be reduced due to a Republican National Convention (RNC) rule violation.{{cite news|date=February 8, 2024|title=Trump wins delegates, VIGOP disputes how many will attend convention|url=https://newsfeed.wtjx.org/podcast/wtjx-newsfeed/2024-02-09/trump-wins-delegates-vigop-disputes-how-many-will-attend-convention|first1=Tom|last1=Eader|website=WTJX}}
