Background

The last election in 2022 resulted in the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party attaining a majority in the chamber for the first time since 2012, gaining the DFL a trifecta from 2023 until 2025.{{Cite web |title=Minnesota Democrats win Capitol ‘trifecta’ |url=https://www.mprnews.org/story/2022/11/09/minnesota-democrats-win-capitol-trifecta |access-date=2023-04-29 |website=MPR News |language=en}} As Minnesota Senate seats follow a 2,4,4 term length schedule, there was no regularly-scheduled Minnesota Senate election in 2024.{{cite web |title=Frequently Asked Questions About the Minnesota Legislature |url=https://www.leg.mn.gov/leg/faq/faq?subject=10#:~:text=How%20long%20are%20terms%20for,for%20a%20two%2Dyear%20term. |access-date=12 April 2024 |website=Minnesota Legislature |quote=Senators are elected for a four-year term and representatives are elected for a two-year term.
