The 2nd Colorado Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment during the American Civil War from the state of Colorado.{{cite book|last=Dyer|first=Frederick H.|title=A Compendium of the War of Rebellion|year=1908|publisher=Dyer Publishing Company|location=Des Moines, Iowa, United States of America |url=https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_OBkNAQAAMAAJ|accessdate=4 October 2011|pages=[https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_OBkNAQAAMAAJ/page/n1002 1004]–6}} On October 13, 1863, the 2nd Colorado Infantry was consolidated with the 3rd Colorado Infantry Regiment in order to create the 2nd Colorado Cavalry Regiment.
History
=Prior to official formation=
On August 29, 1861, James Hobart Ford was authorized by Governor William Gilpin to organize volunteers as a company of infantry.{{cite book|last=Whitford|first=William Clarke|title=Colorado Volunteers in the Civil War|year=1906|publisher=State Historical and Natural History Society|location=Denver, Colorado, United States of America |url=https://archive.org/stream/coloradocivilwar00whitrich#page/42/mode/2up|accessdate=11 October 2011|pages=43–45}} Theodore H. Dodd was appointed command of a second company of volunteers by Governor Gilpin on August 30. Both companies were raised and initially drilled in Cañon City, but by mid-December, both companies had marched to Fort Garland in the San Luis Valley.
