The 4th Canadian Screen Awards was held on March 13, 2016, to honour achievements in Canadian film, television, and digital media production in 2015.[http://www.thespec.com/whatson-story/5946818-canadian-comic-norm-macdonald-to-host-canadian-screen-awards/ "Canadian comic Norm Macdonald to host Canadian Screen Awards"]. Hamilton Spectator, October 6, 2015.

Nominations were announced on January 19, 2016. Throughout the week before the main ceremony, awards in many technical categories were presented in a series of galas.

During the ceremony, host Norm Macdonald suggested the award be called the Candy in honour of late Canadian actor John Candy, comparable to the Academy Awards long being known as Oscars.Rachel West, "[http://globalnews.ca/news/2583536/john-candys-family-reacts-to-canadian-screen-awards-nickname-tribute/ John Candy’s family reacts to Canadian Screen Awards nickname tribute]," ETCanada.com, March 17, URL accessed March 19, 2016. The nickname has still not been officially adopted by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television,[https://www.thestar.com/entertainment/movies/2016/03/14/chair-of-canadian-filmtv-academy-is-sweet-on-calling-awards-the-candys.html "Chair of Canadian film/TV academy is sweet on calling awards ‘the Candys’"]. Toronto Star, March 14, 2016. although academy chair Martin Katz personally endorsed it in a follow-up interview with the Toronto Star.

Pre-show

Leading into the March 13 ceremony, comedian Steve Patterson hosted a special called The Great Canadian Screen Test, quizzing people in the streets of Toronto about the nominated films and who they thought should win the awards in various categories.[https://www.thestar.com/entertainment/television/2016/03/13/tv-tonight-march-13-the-canadian-screen-awards.html "TV Tonight, March 13: The Canadian Screen Awards"].
