History

The group was founded in San Francisco on 4 June 2018, by Lauren Esposito, an arachnology professor at the California Academy of Sciences{{cite web|url=https://www.calacademy.org/press/releases/dr-lauren-esposito-honored-for-500-queer-scientists-campaign|website=California Academy of Sciences|last=Mendez|first=Kelly|title=Dr. Lauren Esposito honored for 500 Queer Scientists campaign|date=14 March 2019|access-date=18 March 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190705182332/https://www.calacademy.org/press/releases/dr-lauren-esposito-honored-for-500-queer-scientists-campaign|archive-date=5 July 2019|url-status=live}} and Sean Vidal Edgerton, a science illustrator and evolutionary virologist at the academy.{{cite news|work=SFGATE|url=https://www.sfgate.com/living/article/Sean-Edgerton-profile-14866922.php|title=Meet the San Francisco artist with a grisly side gig: Performing whale necropsies|date=6 December 2019|last=Bartlett|first=Amanda|access-date=19 March 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200113073913/https://www.sfgate.com/living/article/Sean-Edgerton-profile-14866922.php|archive-date=13 January 2020|url-status=live}} In the press release announcing its foundation, the organization referenced, as part of its motivation, a 2016 paper in the Journal of Homosexuality{{cite journal|journal=Journal of Homosexuality|doi=10.1080/00918369.2015.1078632 |url= https://static1.squarespace.com/static/56b14b283c44d80f317c5948/t/56e1bf7f37013b87984bbbeb/1457635202124/Queer+in+STEM.pdf |title=Queer in STEM: Workplace Experiences Reported in a National Survey of LGBTQA Individuals in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Careers|last1=Yoder|first1=Jeremy B.|author-link1=Jeremy Yoder|last2=Mattheis|first2=Alison|year=2016|volume=63|number=1|pages=1–27|publisher=Routledge|pmid=26241115|s2cid=4514344 }} that found that, in 2013, more than 40% of respondents to a survey who identified as LGBTQ+ had not revealed that they were to their colleagues. The campaign was inspired by the group 500 Women Scientists;{{cite journal|journal=Science|doi=10.1126/science.caredit.aau5929|last=Madhusoodanan|first=Jyoti|title=Visibility matters: A conversation with the co-founder of 500 Queer Scientists|url=https://www.science.org/content/article/visibility-matters-conversation-co-founder-500-queer-scientists|access-date=18 March 2020|date=26 June 2018|s2cid=150274178 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200314040519/https://www.sciencemag.org/careers/2018/06/visibility-matters-conversation-co-founder-500-queer-scientists|archive-date=14 March 2020|url-status=live}} the two groups are separate, but consider themselves to be "informally partnered". At launch, the site contained 50 scientists' stories; within a week this had reached 250, and by 26 June there were 550. The first stories were all written in English.

In June 2019, they held an event with publisher Elsevier to mark World Pride.{{cite web|url=https://www.elsevier.com/connect/elsevier-and-500-queer-scientists-to-hold-nyc-event-for-world-pride|title=Elsevier and 500 Queer Scientists to hold NYC event for World Pride|last=Parsons|first=David James|date=20 June 2019|website=Elsevier Connect|access-date=20 March 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190903123853/https://www.elsevier.com/connect/elsevier-and-500-queer-scientists-to-hold-nyc-event-for-world-pride|archive-date=3 September 2019|url-status=live}} The site had over 900 profiles by July 2019;{{cite magazine|url=https://eos.org/articles/shining-a-spotlight-on-lgbtq-visibility-in-stem|doi=10.1029/2019EO127693|magazine=Eos|title=Shining a Spotlight on LGBTQ+ Visibility in STEM|last=Duncombe|first=Jenessa|date=3 July 2019|volume=100 |access-date=19 March 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190812023207/https://eos.org/articles/shining-a-spotlight-on-lgbtq-visibility-in-stem|archive-date=12 August 2019|url-status=live}} in that month, the group was involved in organizing the second LGBTSTEM Day.{{cite web|url=https://prideinstem.org/lgbtstem-day-2019-press-release/|author=|date=2019|title=LGBTSTEM Day, July 5th 2019|website=Pride in STEM|access-date=19 March 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191102092915/https://prideinstem.org/lgbtstem-day-2019-press-release/|archive-date=2 November 2019|url-status=live}}{{cite magazine|magazine=APS News|title=APS Celebrates LGBTSTEM Day|url=https://www.aps.org/publications/apsnews/updates/lgbtstem-day.cfm|date=3 July 2019|author=|access-date=19 March 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190708205512/https://www.aps.org/publications/apsnews/updates/lgbtstem-day.cfm|archive-date=8 July 2019|url-status=live}}
