It was released on 9 August 2024 through Columbia Records and Sony Music UK. The album is composed of various previously-released singles, released between 2015 and 2024, that were not included on an album, as well as a brand new track and lead single, "Free". The album is a sequel to 18 Months (2012), which was Harris' first album to heavily feature guest vocalists. The album follows his sixth studio album, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 (2022).
Background
Harris first teased the project on 7 August 2024, after posting the album's artwork on his social media accounts, and it was released two days later. The album contains all previously released singles that Harris had not featured on an album, except "Hype" and "Over Now". The album also features three singles that were released under Harris' Love Regenerator alias.{{cite web |url=http://stoneyroads.com/2020/01/calvin-harris-teases-different-music-project/ |title=Calvin Harris teases completely 'different' music project |work=Stoney Roads |date=21 January 2020 |access-date=21 January 2020 |archive-date=13 July 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200713022618/http://stoneyroads.com/2020/01/calvin-harris-teases-different-music-project/ |url-status=live }}{{cite web |title=Calvin Harris drops two 90s-inspired tracks : Listen |url=https://djmag.com/news/calvin-harris-drops-90s-inspired-track-%E2%80%98hypnagogic%E2%80%99-listen |website=DJ Mag |access-date=27 August 2024 |language=en |date=23 January 2020 |archive-date=27 August 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240827065038/https://djmag.com/news/calvin-harris-drops-90s-inspired-track-%E2%80%98hypnagogic%E2%80%99-listen |url-status=live }}
Despite its reference to his 18 Months studio album, 96 Months does not feature any of the songs which were included on that album.{{cite web |title=Calvin Harris’ biggest hits since 2015 released on new compilation, ‘96 Months’: Listen |url=https://djmag.com/news/calvin-harris-biggest-hits-2015-released-new-compilation-96-months-listen |website=DJ Mag |access-date=21 May 2025 |language=en |date=12 August 2024}} Instead, the album mainly features songs released by Harris over the previous nine years prior to its release.{{cite web |last1=Bain |first1=Katie |title=Calvin Harris Releases Hits-Spanning Compilation Album ’96 Months’: Stream It Now |url=https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/calvin-harris-96-weeks-greatest-hits-album-listen-1235750209/ |website=Billboard |access-date=21 May 2025 |date=9 August 2024}} As a result, songs which achieved considerable commercial success such as "Feel So Close", "I'm Not Alone" and "Sweet Nothing" were omitted from the album.{{cite web |last1=Bain |first1=Katie |title=Calvin Harris Releases Hits-Spanning Compilation Album ’96 Months’: Stream It Now |url=https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/calvin-harris-96-weeks-greatest-hits-album-listen-1235750209/ |website=Billboard |access-date=21 May 2025 |date=9 August 2024}}
Cameron Sunkel from EDM Magazine compared the album as "a victory lap" for Harris, and said that the album doesn't "shy away from showcasing Harris’ knack for crafting anthems that resonate with millions".{{cite web |title=image caption CALVIN HARRIS DROPS "96 MONTHS," A PULSE-POUNDING RETROSPECTIVE OF DANCE HITS |url=https://edm.com/music-releases/calvin-harris-96-months |website=edm.com |access-date=21 May 2025}}
