The 99th Illinois Infantry was organized at Florence, Illinois{{sfnp|Illinois Adjutant General|2024|pp=313}} and mustered into Federal service on August 23, 1862.{{sfnmp|1a1=Dyer|1y=1908|1p=1089|2a1=Federal Publishing Company|2y=1908|2pp=319-320}}
