Portland cement was patented in 1824 by the Englishman Joseph Aspdin. Six decades later the Aalborg businessman Hans Holm and the engineer Frederick Læssøe Smidth built a cement factory {{convert|4|km}} northeast of Aalborg in the town of Rørdal.
The Aalborg Portland-Cement Factory was founded in 1889. Aalborg Portland produces four major products: grey cement, white cement, ready-mixed concrete and aggregates. In 1898, the company's growth accelerated after it purchased two rotary kilns from the Philadelphia-based company Laxhbury & Spackman.{{Cite book |last=Pedersen |first=Morten |title=Internationalisation and Strategic Control: An Industrial History |publisher=Routledge |year=2021 |isbn=978-0-429-82093-9 |location=Oxon |language=en}} In 2009 the Sinai White Portland Cement division became the "biggest white cement integrated plant worldwide in terms of capacity".{{cite web|title=About us|url=http://www.aalborgportland.com/About-us|publisher=Aalborg Portland|accessdate=31 August 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141011043640/http://www.aalborgportland.com/About-us|archive-date=11 October 2014|url-status=dead|df=dmy-all}} Since 2003, the company is a subsidiary of Cementir Holding S.p.A. Impact on climate change
Aalborg Portland is considered the biggest polluter in Denmark.{{Cite news |date=2022-04-20 |title=Denmark proposes corporate carbon tax to meet climate target |language=en |work=Reuters |url=https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/denmark-proposes-corporate-carbon-tax-meet-climate-target-2022-04-20/ |access-date=2022-09-09}} The emissions of the industrial company in 2018 were equivalent to 2.2 million tons of CO2, or 4% of the national CO2 emissions.{{cite news|title = Danmarks største CO2-udleder i industrien: Aalborg Portland kæmper med sine grønne mål |url = https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/penge/danmarks-stoerste-co2-udleder-i-industrien-aalborg-portland-kaemper-med-sine-groenne |work = Danmarks Radio |date = 2019-10-10 |accessdate = 2019-12-21}}{{cite news|title = Mindre CO2: Aalborg Portland bliver regeringens første klimapartner |url = https://www.tv2nord.dk/aalborg/mindre-co2-aalborg-portland-bliver-regeringens-forste-klimapartner|work = TV2Nord |date = 2019-10-31 |accessdate = 2019-12-21}}
According to the Danish Economic Council, the cement industry does not have a sufficient economic interest to reduce its CO2 emissions, because the price to pollute is too low.{{cite news|title = Danmarks største CO2-udleder i industrien: Aalborg Portland kæmper med sine grønne mål |url = https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/penge/danmarks-stoerste-co2-udleder-i-industrien-aalborg-portland-kaemper-med-sine-groenne |work = Danmarks Radio |date = 2019-10-10 |accessdate = 2019-12-21}} In 2022, Aalborg Portland announced a corporate roadmap that sets an emissions ceiling target of no more than 600,000 tons by 2030.{{Cite web |date=June 17, 2022 |title=Aalborg Portland plans to reduce CO2 emissions by DKK1.6Mt in 2030 |url=https://www.cemnet.com/News/story/172879/aalborg-portland-plans-to-reduce-co2-emissions-by-dkk1-6mt-in-2030.html |access-date=2022-09-09 |website=International Cement Review}}
