Absolute Magnitude is an American discontinued, semi-professional science fiction magazine started in Spring/Summer 1993 issue under the name Harsh Mistress.{{cite web|title=Absolute Magnitude |url=http://www.philsp.com/mags/absolute_magnitude.html|work=Philsp.com|accessdate=18 July 2020}} However, in 1994 after only two issues the name was changed to Absolute Magnitude. In 2002 the name was changed again to Absolute Magnitude & Aboriginal Science Fiction when the publishers acquired the rights to Aboriginal Science Fiction. Absolute Magnitude was published by DNA Publications and edited by Warren Lapine.{{cite book|author1=Stephen Blake Mettee|author2=Michelle Doland|author3=Doris Hall|title=American Directory of Writer's Guidelines: More Than 1,700 Magazine Editors and Book Publishers Explain What They Are Looking for from Freelancers|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Ek960DxJ9Z0C&pg=PA9|date=February 2007|publisher=Quill Driver Books|isbn=978-1-884956-58-4|page=9}} During this period it was headquartered in Radford, Virginia. Although it was supposed to be a quarterly magazine its actual releases were irregular. After releasing twenty-one issues under the Absolute Magnitude title (plus two as Harsh Mistress), Spring 2005 issue was the final issue of the magazine.
Absolute Magnitude was nominated for the 2002 Hugo Award for Best Semiprozine with Lapine noted as the editor.{{cite web|url=http://www.thehugoawards.org/hugo-history/2002-hugo-awards/|title=2002 Hugo Awards|date=26 July 2007 |publisher=World Science Fiction Society|accessdate=19 April 2010|archiveurl= https://web.archive.org/web/20100509054201/http://www.thehugoawards.org/hugo-history/2002-hugo-awards|archivedate= 9 May 2010|url-status= live}}
