During years of civil war many research institutes in Afghanistan have been destroyed. The ASA building as well lacks adequate infrastructure, laboratories, equipment and libraries.{{cite web|title=Afghan academy appeals for help in reviving science|url=http://www.scidev.net/global/publishing/news/afghan-academy-appeals-for-help-in-reviving-science-1.html|work=SciDevNet|accessdate=30 May 2014}}
