Adamana is an unincorporated community in Apache County in the northeast section of the U.S. state of Arizona. The town was settled in 1896 in what was then the Arizona Territory.

History

Adamana was founded in 1896 when the railroad was extended to that point.{{cite book|last=Hinckley|first=Jim|title=The Route 66 Encyclopedia|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=_kr0AwAAQBAJ&pg=PA5|date=November 15, 2012|publisher=MBI Publishing Company|isbn=978-1-61058-688-7|page=5}}

The town was named for Adam Hanna,{{cite book|last=Barnes|first=Will Croft|title=Arizona Place Names|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=9VpVB2Rr90AC&pg=PA10|year=1988|publisher=University of Arizona Press|isbn=978-0-8165-1074-0|page=10}} a local rancher who was a distant relative of the late Mark Hanna, the original settler of the region. Originally the place was known as Adam Hanna's, as time passed and more people came to visit, the elision of a few letters gave us the name Adamana.{{cite news|last=Whiting|first=Lilian|title=New York Times, July 22, 1906}}

A post office was established at Adamana in 1896, and remained in operation until 1969.{{cite web | url=http://www.postalhistory.com/postoffices.asp?task=display&state=AZ&county=Apache | title=Apache County | publisher=Jim Forte Postal History | access-date=November 4, 2015}}

In 1904 John Muir and his daughters, Helen and Wanda, were living at Adamana, Arizona at the Forest Hotel, a large rambling place by the railroad tracks run by a couple who gave guided tours of the Petrified Forest six miles south. From the hotel Muir would make regular trips to the Blue Forest (now Blue Mesa) making regular trips there alone or accompanied by the girls.Rediscovering America – John Muir in his time and ours.
