The neighborhood's name comes from Adam R. Steen ({{died in|1807}}), a storekeeper who owned the property, combined with the Norwegian {{langx|no|stue|translation=cabin, house with one single room|label=none}}, inflected in definite form. A similar etymology is evident in the name of the Majorstuen neighborhood.
The September 2009 issue of Monocle featured an article on Thereses gate, a street running through the heart of the neighborhood, noting its "small-town feel".{{cite magazine |last1=Nykänen Andersson |first1=Elna |date=September 2009 |title=Royal society |url=https://monocle.com/magazine/issues/26/royal-society/ |url-access=subscription |magazine=Monocle |issue=26 |others=Photography by Marius Ektvedt |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240810111041/https://monocle.com/magazine/issues/26/royal-society/ |archive-date=10 August 2024 }}
