The genus was first described by Genevieve Feldmann-Mazoyer in 1941,{{Cite book|last=Feldmann-Mazoyer|first=G.|title=Recherches sur les Céramiacées de la Méditerranée occidentale|publisher=Minerva|year=1940|isbn=|location=Algeria|pages=511|language=French}} and the type species is Aglaothamnion furcellariae (currently accepted as Aglaothamnion tenuissimum).
