Agonostomus is a genus of ray-finned fish in the family Mugilidae, the mullets. Considered to be the most primitive of the mullets, they are generally marine fish (though they spend much of their adult lives in freshwater). The two members of the genus occur in the Indian Ocean.{{cite journal|url=http://base.repositorio.unesp.br/bitstream/handle/11449/99430/nirchiot_m_dr_botib.pdf?sequence=1#page=87|title=Classical and molecular cytogenetic characterization of Agonostomus monticola, a primitive species of Mugilidae (Mugiliformes)|journal=Genetica|volume=135|issue=1|pages=1–5|pmid=18330712|year=2009|author1=Nirchio|first1=M|last2=Oliveira|first2=C|last3=Ferreira|first3=I.
