The Aigrette-class submarines were a class of two submarines built for the French Navy between 1903 and 1905. They were essentially experimental submarines, and although in service during World War I, saw no action. The class was designed by Maxime Laubeuf and used Drzewiecki drop collar launchers and external cradles to launch torpedoes.

Design

The submarines had a surfaced displacement of {{Convert|178|LT|t|0|lk=on|abbr=off}} and a submerged displacement of {{Convert|253|LT|t|0|lk=off}}. The dimensions were {{Convert|35.9|m|ftin|lk=on|abbr=off}} long, with a beam of {{Convert|4.04|m|ftin|abbr=on}} and a draught of {{Convert|2.63|m|ftin|abbr=on}}. They had a single shaft powered by one diesel engine for surface running of {{Convert|150|hp|0|abbr=on}} and an electric motor which produced {{Convert|130|hp||lk=on|abbr=off}} for submerged propulsion. The maximum speed was {{Convert|9.3|kn||lk=on|abbr=off}} on the surface and {{Convert|6.2|kn||}} while submerged with a surfaced range of {{convert|1300|nmi||lk=on|abbr=off}} at {{convert|8|kn|km/h}} and a submerged range of {{convert|65|nmi|km}} at {{convert|3.8|kn|km/h}}. Their complement was 14 men.Smigielski, p. 208Fontenoy, p. 79{{cite web|url=http://sous-marin.france.pagesperso-orange.fr/Q038.htm|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131029223832/http://sous-marin.france.pagesperso-orange.fr/Q038.htm|url-status=dead|archive-date=29 October 2013|title=Q 038|date=29 October 2013}}

Their armament comprised two {{Convert|450|mm|in|1|abbr=on}} Drzewiecki drop collar torpedo launchers and two {{Convert|450|mm|in|1|abbr=on}} external cradles.
