History

The announcement to launch Airtel Zero came soon after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released its consultation paper on OTT (Over-the-top) services and invited submissions on introducing OTT charges. Through the Zero platform, app developers and internet service providers (ISPs) would be able to make a part of their entire mobile app free for customers if they pay Airtel a fixed fee for the cost of data transfer incurred while using their services.{{cite news|last1=ETbureau|title=Critics warn Airtel for flouting net neutrality; startups, others can offer apps for free on platform|url=http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2015-04-07/news/60902957_1_net-neutrality-apps-bharti-airtel|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150410183841/http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2015-04-07/news/60902957_1_net-neutrality-apps-bharti-airtel|url-status=dead|archive-date=10 April 2015|access-date=24 April 2015|publisher=The Economic Times|date=7 April 2015}} After the launch, Airtel faced the lot of criticism on social media with users claiming it to be against net neutrality. Later TRAI supported net neutrality and ruled against differential data pricing based on content which resulted in ending zero-rating platforms in India including Facebook Free Basics and Airtel Zero.{{Cite news|url=https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/feb/08/india-facebook-free-basics-net-neutrality-row|title=India deals blow to Facebook in people-powered 'net neutrality' row|last=Soni|first=Aayush|date=2016-02-08|work=The Guardian|access-date=2017-03-09|language=en-GB|issn=0261-3077}}{{Cite news|url=http://qz.com/612129/the-lawyers-techies-and-comedians-who-fought-facebook-to-keep-indias-internet-free-and-open/|title=The lawyers, techies, and comedians who fought Facebook to keep India's internet free and open|last=Punit|first=Itika Sharma|work=Quartz|access-date=2017-03-09|language=en-US}}{{Cite news|url=http://indianexpress.com/article/technology/tech-news-technology/facebook-free-basics-ban-net-neutrality-all-you-need-to-know/|title=TRAI supports Net Neutrality, effectively bans Free Basics: All that happened in this debate|date=2015-12-29|work=The Indian Express|access-date=2017-03-09|language=en-US}}
