Ala is a populated area, a socken (not to be confused with parish), on the Swedish island of Gotland.The exact extent of the socken, now district, can be obtained by clicking on Kartinställningar and check the Socken box in the menu of [http://www.fmis.raa.se/cocoon/fornsok/search.html?parish=893&tab=2&page=1 this map] from the Swedish National Heritage Board database. Ala is known for the old carvings, some medieval, of ships on the walls of the church tower. Geography
