State Route 158 (SR 158) is a {{convert|21.44|mi|km|adj=mid|-long}} state highway in northern Mobile County in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Alabama. The western terminus of the highway is at an intersection with U.S. Route 98 (US 98) northwest of Wilmer, just shy of the Mississippi state line. The eastern terminus of the highway is at an intersection with U.S. Route 43 (US 43) at Saraland. The route will eventually become part of US 98 west of Mobile to the Mississippi state line as a four-lane bypass of Semmes.{{cite web|url=http://www.safe98.com/faqs.php|title=Safe 98 – Frequently Asked Questions|year=2016|publisher=Alabama Department of Transportation|access-date=December 18, 2016}}

Route description

SR 158 serves as a connector route between U.S. Route 98 (US 98) and U.S. Route 45 (US 45) to the west and Interstate 65 (I-65) and U.S. Route 43 (US 43) to the east. It is planned as a four-lane expressway that connects Mississippi, Semmes, the University of Mobile and Saraland, but portions of it west of the university are still two-lane as of 2024. The route widens to five lanes at its intersection with SR 213 near its interchange with I-65 at exit 13. The highway narrows to two lanes east of the interstate highway as it continues to its intersection with US 43.

History

SR 158 was first established in 1963.{{Citation needed|reason=No source|date=March 2024}}

SR 158 was extended from its previous western terminus at Newburn Road {{convert|12.16|mi|km}} to US 98. It bypasses a stretch of US 98 ("Old 98"), colloquially known as "Bloody 98" by locals due to its high amount of traffic fatalities. Construction began in 2017 and was originally scheduled for completion by late 2023 to early 2024.{{Cite web|last=Reporter|first=Kati Weis FOX10 News|title="Bloody 98" to be replaced as extension project resumes|url=https://www.fox10tv.com/news/bloody-98-to-be-replaced-as-extension-project-resumes/article_4e87d0d6-498a-5e9b-9e3f-a08b41cfd790.html|access-date=2021-12-01|website=FOX10 News|language=en}} Most of the route is completed, with the portion west of Wilmer still under construction as of June 2023.{{Cite web |title=SR-158-Project Info |url=https://www.dot.state.al.us/projects/swregion/SR158ProjectInfo.html |access-date=2023-06-10 |website=www.dot.state.al.us}} The extension opened to traffic on October 17, 2023.{{cite news |last1=Harmon |first1=Karris |title=After two decades, Highway 158 opens to traffic in Mobile County |url=https://mynbc15.com/news/local/two-decades-in-the-making-highway-158-opens-to-traffic |access-date=March 22, 2024 |work=WPMI-TV |publisher=Deerfield Media |date=October 17, 2023}}
