Hyland ran in the new electoral district of Cypress-Redcliff for the 1986 general election and won a close race over Lloyd Robinson running under the Representative Party banner.{{cite web|url=http://www.abheritage.ca/abpolitics/database/maps_choice.asp?Year=1986&Constit=Cypress-Redcliff |title=Cypress-Redcliff election results 1986 |publisher=Alberta Heritage Foundation |access-date=2008-05-12 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110612184648/http://www.abheritage.ca/abpolitics/database/maps_choice.asp?Year=1986&Constit=Cypress-Redcliff |archive-date=2011-06-12 }} Robinson and Hyland would face each other again in the 1989 general election. Hyland would defeat Robinson by 600 votes, who increased his popular support running under the Liberal banner.
