Prior to the 2022 contest, Albania participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 17 times since its first entry in {{escyr|2004}}. The nation's highest placing in the contest, to this point, was the fifth place, which was achieved in {{escyr|2012}} with the song "{{lang|la|Suus|italics=no}}" performed by Rona Nishliu. Albania accomplished its second-highest placing when first participating in 2004, with the song "The Image of You" performed by Anjeza Shahini, finishing in seventh place. During its tenure in the contest, the nation failed to qualify for the final seven times, with the {{escyr|2016}} and {{escyr|2017}} entries being the most recent non-qualifiers. After 2017, Albania managed to qualify for the final in the {{escyr|2018}}, {{escyr|2019}} and {{escyr|2021}} contests, with Anxhela Peristeri finishing in 21st place with "Karma".{{cite web |publisher=European Broadcasting Union (EBU) |title=Countries: Albania |url=https://eurovision.tv/country/albania |access-date=12 May 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201026144748/https://eurovision.tv/country/albania|archive-date=26 October 2020 |url-status=live}}

Following the nation's debut in 2004, RTSH has consistently selected the Albanian performers and songs through the latter event, which features a competition among artists and songs. The broadcaster confirmed Albania's intention to participate in the 2022 contest on 5 July 2021, with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) reaffirming the nation's participation on 20 October.{{cite web |last=Jiandani |first=Sanjay (Sergio) |publisher=ESCToday |title=Albania: RTSH confirms participation in Eurovision 2022: Fest 60 preparations kick off |url=http://esctoday.com/183656/albania-rtsh-confirms-participation-in-eurovision-2022-fest-60-preparations-kick-off/ |access-date=12 May 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210713105556/http://esctoday.com/183656/albania-rtsh-confirms-participation-in-eurovision-2022-fest-60-preparations-kick-off/ |archive-date=13 July 2021 |date=5 July 2021 |url-status=live}}{{cite web |publisher=European Broadcasting Union (EBU) |title=Revealed: the 41 countries joining Eurovision in Turin 2022 |url=https://eurovision.tv/story/41-countries-for-2022 |access-date=13 May 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220511081905/https://eurovision.tv/story/41-countries-for-2022 |archive-date=11 May 2022 |date=20 October 2021 |url-status=live}}
