History
The new school is built on the site of the previous Albert Park College in Danks Street which closed at the end of 2006 due to a dramatic decline in enrolments.{{cite web |url=http://www.legislation.vic.gov.au/domino/Web_Notes/newmedia.nsf/35504bc71d3adebcca256cfc0082c2b8/4cbba4664e970785ca2572060004fbaf!OpenDocument |work=Media Release: MINISTER FOR EDUCATION |title=New Secondary School For Albert Park |date=12 October 2006 |publisher=legislation.vic.gov.au |access-date=2010-05-23 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20091026105115/http://www.legislation.vic.gov.au/domino/Web_Notes/newmedia.nsf/35504bc71d3adebcca256cfc0082c2b8/4cbba4664e970785ca2572060004fbaf!OpenDocument |archive-date=26 October 2009 |url-status=dead }} Originally opened as South Melbourne High School then renamed Albert Park High School, it was renamed again as Hobson's Bay Secondary College, and then Albert Park Secondary College before closing in 2006.
In 2002 the State Government spent $1 million on renovations to fix leaking walls and rotting carpet, local MP John Thwaites saying the decay was caused by eight years of neglect by the former Kennett government. In the five years to 2005 student numbers had fallen from 460 to 242,{{cite web |url=http://www.theage.com.au/news/education-news/our-shrinking-schools/2005/11/25/1132703378429.html?page=fullpage |title=Our shrinking schools |work=The Age | date = 28 November 2005 |author=Caroline Milburn |publisher=theage.com.au |access-date=2010-05-23 }} by 2006 they had fallen further to 206 with only 15 students enrolled to start year 7 the next year.{{cite web |url=http://www.theage.com.au/news/education-news/new-start-for-failed-school/2007/10/12/1191696183086.html |title=New start for 'failed' school |work=The Age |author=Caroline Milburn |date=15 October 2007 |publisher=theage.com.au |access-date=2010-05-23 }} Meanwhile, the suburb had gentrified during the past two decades, but local residents chose not to send their children to the school because of the poor reputation and low academic results.
The buildings were demolished between May and November 2008. Soil contamination (common in the area from the former Gasworks sites) delayed construction of the new buildings, which was originally planned to reopen in 2009. After delays in construction, a new purpose-built school was opened for Year 7 students in 2011, with contemporary architecture designed by Woods Bagot,{{cite web |url=http://www.woodsbagot.com/en/Pages/AlbertParkSeondaryCollege.aspx |title=Woods Bagot: Albert Park Secondary College, Victoria |access-date=18 November 2010 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20101202004257/http://www.woodsbagot.com/en/Pages/AlbertParkSeondaryCollege.aspx |archive-date=2 December 2010 |url-status=dead}}{{cite web |url=http://www.albertparkcollege.vic.edu.au/facilities.html |title=Albert Park College website: Facilities}} and expanded to house 1200+ students from years 7 to 12,{{Update inline|date=March 2018}}{{cite web |url=http://port-phillip-leader.whereilive.com.au/news/story/albert-park-college-a-step-closer/ |title=Albert Park College a step closer |date=24 December 2008 |work= Port Phillip Leader |publisher=port-phillip-leader.whereilive.com.au |access-date=2010-05-23 }} costing $20 million to build.{{cite web |url=http://port-phillip-leader.whereilive.com.au/news/story/albert-park-school-s-clean-slate/ |title=Albert Park school's clean slate |date=3 March 2009 |work=Port Phillip Leader |publisher=port-phillip-leader.whereilive.com.au |access-date=2010-05-23 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100920044125/http://port-phillip-leader.whereilive.com.au/news/story/albert-park-school-s-clean-slate/ |archive-date=20 September 2010 |url-status=dead}}
