The Albina Library is a branch of the Multnomah County Library, located in northeast Portland, Oregon.{{cite web|url=http://events.multcolib.org/venues/albina-library|title=Albina Library|accessdate=November 1, 2012|publisher=Multnomah County Library|archive-date=October 22, 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121022154613/http://events.multcolib.org/venues/albina-library|url-status=live}} The library's origins date back to 1906 with the establishment of a small reading room that housed 100 books. The branch has relocated four times since then, moving back to the building which used to house The Title Wave Used Bookstore from a retail plaza in northeast Portland.
The branch offers the Multnomah County Library catalog of two million books, periodicals and other materials.
History
Albina Library was established in 1906 as a small reading room which housed 100 books under the custodianship of Mrs. P.P. Leche.{{cite web|url=http://multcolib.org/agcy/alb-history.html|title=Albina Library History|accessdate=November 1, 2012|publisher=Multnomah County Library|archive-date=July 12, 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120712194152/http://multcolib.org/agcy/alb-history.html|url-status=live}} According to Multnomah County Library, the precise location of the reading room is unknown and circulation records for 1906 do not exist. In September 1907 the library relocated to a larger space within the Emporium building on Williams Avenue. The Library Association of Portland's 1907 annual report states, "... on September 16, the branch was opened in charge of Miss Ella G. Dewart. The eagerness with which the people of Albina young and old have taken advantage of this library has been a surprise even to those who believed most thoroughly in it. It has been almost impossible to keep the shelves supplied with books." In 1909 the library moved to Russell Street; by the end of the year the collection contained 3,149 volumes and circulation increased to 36,800 items.
In 2009, the library closed briefly for a remodeling of the staff workroom.{{cite web|url=http://www.multcolib.org/news/2009/albclosure.html|title=Albina Library closed July 28–30|publisher=Multnomah County Library|date=July 2, 2009|accessdate=November 2, 2012|archive-date=July 12, 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120712193441/http://multcolib.org/news/2009/albclosure.html|url-status=live}} Self-checkout stations and security gates were installed in 2010.{{cite web|url=http://www.multcolib.org/news/2010/albclosure.html |title=Albina Library Closed Nov. 16 for Equipment Installation |date=October 19, 2010 |access-date=November 2, 2012 |publisher=Multnomah County Library |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120712190130/http://multcolib.org/news/2010/albclosure.html |archive-date=July 12, 2012 }}{{cite news|url=http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2010/11/albina_library_to_close_for_da.html|title=Albina Library to Close for Day While New Book Scanners and Security Are Installed|first=Matt|last=Buxton|date=November 12, 2010|accessdate=November 2, 2012|work=The Oregonian|publisher=Advance Publications|issn=8750-1317|location=Portland, Oregon|archive-date=September 29, 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140929011043/http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2010/11/albina_library_to_close_for_da.html|url-status=live}}
