The name 'ō'io may refer to other species of bonefish in Hawaii, such as the longjaw bonefish Albula virgata, and the roundjaw/shortjaw bonefish Albula glossodonta.

Taxonomy and nomenclature

Bonefish were once believed to be a single species with a global distribution, but 11 different species have since been identified.{{cite web |last1=Suescun |first1=Alex |title=All About Bonefish |url=https://www.saltwatersportsman.com/species/fish-species/all-about-bonefish/ |website=saltwatersportsman.com |date=24 December 2014 |publisher=Salt Water Sportsman |access-date=10 December 2020}}{{Cite web |title=Species in "Albula" |url=https://www.fishbase.org/identification/SpeciesList.php?genus=Albula |access-date=2025-05-08 |website=www.fishbase.org}}

Albula virgata (the longjaw bonefish) and Albula oligolepis (the smallscale bonefish) were formerly assigned to this species, but are now recognized as distinct.Hidaka, K., Y. Iwatsuki and J.E. Randall, 2008. A review of the Indo-Pacific bonefishes of the Albula argentea complex, with a description of a new species. Ichthyol. Res. 55:53-64. A. virgata is only found around the Hawaiian islands, while A. argentea has a wider distribution.{{Cite journal |last=Guindon |first=Kathy |last2=Andrij Horodysky (Hampton University) |last3=McBride |first3=Richard |last4=MacDonald |first4=Tim |last5=Aaron Adams (Mote Marine Laboratory) |last6=Jonathan Shenker (Florida Institute of Technology) |last7=Rocky Ward (USGS Biological Resources Division) |date=2011-03-29 |title=IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Albula argentea |url=https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/194298/2310290 |journal=IUCN Red List of Threatened Species |archive-url=http://web.archive.org/web/20250429191436/https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/194298/2310290 |archive-date=2025-04-29}}
