Sulphurous mineral springs were discovered near Aldfield in around 1698 leading to the establishment of Aldfield Spa. Lord de Grey, on whose land the spring was, adapted an adjacent cottage so that the water could be used there for the treatment of various ailments. It closed in the 1930s but the ruined buildings are still visible.{{cite book |title=A Topographical Dictionary of England |section=Aldbourn – Aldingbourne |editor-first=Samuel |editor-last=Lewis |location=London |year=1848 |pages=26–31 |via=British History Online |url=http://www.british-history.ac.uk/topographical-dict/england/pp26-31 |accessdate=2 January 2018}}{{cite web |url=https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/mediafile/100048013/aislabie-walk-leaflet.pdf |title=The Aislabie Walk |first=Mark |last=Reid |publisher=The Woodland Trust |accessdate=2 January 2018}}{{cite book |title=The Spas of England and Principal Sea-bathing Places: Northern Spas |first=A. B. |last=Granville |url=https://archive.org/details/spasenglandandp02grangoog |pages=105–7 |publisher=Henry Colburn |location=London |year=1841 |accessdate=2 January 2018}}
