Career
Melnik graduated from Odessa Hydrometeorological Institute, and worked for a time as a journalist and publisher. He was the father of film producer Anton Melnik.
Death
Melnik died at the Kitabo-Oron waterfall (Big Irkindinsky waterfall), located in the western part of the Putorana Nature Reserve, 120 km from Norilsk,{{cite news|url=https://www.rbc.ru/rbcfreenews/6138b4c99a79477ff06de33d|title=Названо место гибели главы МЧС|language=Russian|publisher=RBK Group|date=8 September 2021|access-date=8 September 2021}}{{cite news|url=https://www.rbc.ru/politics/08/09/2021/61387ed99a7947660dc0f416|title=Росбизнесконсалтинг, 8 сентября 2021. Погиб глава МЧС Евгений Зиничев|language=Russian|publisher=RBK Group|date=8 September 2021|access-date=8 September 2021}} together with the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations Yevgeny Zinichev during the scouting of a filming location. Melnik slipped and fell off a cliff into the water. Melnik's funeral service was held at the Church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachi on 11 September 2021, and he was buried later that day in the village of {{ill|Afineyevo, Moscow Oblast|ru|Афинеево (Московская область)}}, where he had lived.
