Aleksin ({{langx|ru|Але́ксин}}) is a town and the administrative center of Aleksinsky District in Tula Oblast, Russia, located {{convert|71|km|sp=us}} northwest of Tula, the administrative center of the oblast. Population: {{ru-census|p2021=57,102|p2010=61,732|p2002=68,156|p1989=74,274}}

History

It was founded at the end of the 13th century{{cite book|author=Георгий Михайлович Лаппо|title=Энциклопедия Города России|year=2003|publisher=Большая Российская Энциклопедия|location=Moscow|isbn=5-7107-7399-9|page=18}} and first mentioned in 1348 in the Nikon Chronicle. Aleksin was sacked by Khan Akhmat in 1472 during his invasion of the Grand Duchy of Moscow. Because of its location on the Oka River, it was, for a while, an important inland port. Aleksin was granted town status in 1777.{{citation needed|date=May 2010}}

The town expanded in the 1930s with the construction of a chemical plant.

During World War II, Aleksin was under German occupation from 29 November 1941 until 17 December 1941.[https://www.soldat.ru/spravka/freedom/1-ssr-1.html Освобождение городов]

On the night of 8–9 November 2024, during the Russo-Ukrainian War, Ukraine launched a drone attack on the Aleksin Chemical Plant—a subsidiary of state corporation Rostec—about {{cvt|120|mi|km|disp=flip}} south of Moscow, causing a series of explosions and fires at the plant which manufactures ammunition and explosives for the Russian military. The air raid began around 9 p.m. with explosions reported around 3 a.m. on the 9th November. Cascading explosions at 1 p.m. due to chemicals catching fire from the earlier strikes led to authorities evacuating workers. Operations were halted at the plant. Russian sources did not acknowledge the attacks success, "as is common following a reported attack by Ukraine on one of [Russia's] military sites."{{cite news |last=Cole|first=Brendan |title=Ukraine Strikes Russian Ammunition Plant Deep Behind Enemy Lines |url=https://www.newsweek.com/russia-ukraine-tula-drones-enemy-1983238 |date=9 November 2024 |access-date=2024-11-09 |work=Newsweek }}{{cite news |last=Khomenko|first=Ivan |title=Drone Attack Targets Military Chemical Plant in Russia’s Tula Region |url=https://united24media.com/latest-news/drone-attack-targets-military-chemical-plant-in-russias-tula-region-3621 |date=9 November 2024 |access-date=2024-11-09 }}
