New media activism
Fein was an early adopter of various online channels in organising for social justice.{{cite web|url=http://www.jwire.com.au/a-sensible-jew-joins-the-aice/|title=A Sensible Jew joins the AICE|date=21 January 2010|website=Jwire.com.au|accessdate=14 December 2017}} Her blog, The Sensible Jew,{{cite news|title=Blog takes on the 'swill' who speak for Jews|date=June 7, 2009|first=Tom|last=Hyland|publisher=The Age|access-date=August 28, 2022|url=https://www.theage.com.au/national/blog-takes-on-the-swill-who-speak-for-jews-20090606-bz8a.html}} was at the forefront of a campaign against homophobia in Australia's Jewish community, and she has since been an outspoken proponent of LGBTQI inclusion in organised Jewish communal life.{{cite episode|series=PM|network=ABC|station=Radio National|url=http://www.abc.net.au/pm/content/2009/s2688016.htm|title=Jewish leaders accused of ignoring homophobia|date=16 September 2009|quote=It's not enough to say that homophobia is problematic. Feminism and Orthodox Judaism
The worldwide push to redress systemic discrimination against women in Orthodox Judaism became central to Fein's activism after her marriage to an Orthodox Rabbi in 2011. A long time feminist,{{cite web|url=http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/dalit-kaplan/the-gender-agenda/e/episode-37-alex-fein-on-women-backing-women-42855507|title=Israeli activist feminist Hamutal Gouri - updated from The Gender Agenda|website=www.stitcher.com|accessdate=14 December 2017}} she is an advocate of a systems approach to the religious community's pathologies, identifying the Haredi hegemony over the rabbinate and their attitudes towards sex and sexuality as common factors linking such issues as homophobia, the cover up of sexual abuse, and violence against women (including igun/gett refusal). She contends that there is space within authentic Orthodoxy for reconciling feminism and the rights of the individual.{{cite web|url=http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/earshot/immersion-2/7155782|title=Immersion|date=10 February 2016|website=Radio National|accessdate=14 December 2017}} She is a firm believer in the need for Orthodox women to have the skills and capacities to lead their congregations.{{cite web|url=http://www.shira.org.au/newsblog/2012/6/22/parshat-korach.html|title=Parshat Korach|website=Shira.org|accessdate=14 December 2017}}

Judy Wilyman incident
{{main|Judy Wilyman}}
Following The University of Wollongong's conferring a PhD on Judy Wilyman for a thesis skeptical of vaccination, Fein opened a change.org petition calling on the Department of Education and Training to take disciplinary action against the university.{{cite web|url=http://www.illawarramercury.com.au/story/3668397/travesty-petition-against-uow-anti-vaccine-thesis/|title='Travesty': petition against UOW anti-vaccine thesis|first=GLEN|last=HUMPHRIES|date=17 January 2016|website=Illawarramercury.com.au|accessdate=14 December 2017}} The petition was unsuccessful.{{Cite web|url=https://www.change.org/p/simon-birmingham-stop-the-university-of-wollongong-s-spread-of-disease-and-death-via-anti-vaccination-phd|title=Petition · Simon Birmingham: Stop the University of Wollongong's Spre…|access-date=5 January 2022|archive-date=7 January 2020|archive-url=https://archive.today/20200107040000/https://www.change.org/p/simon-birmingham-stop-the-university-of-wollongong-s-spread-of-disease-and-death-via-anti-vaccination-phd|url-status=bot: unknown}}
Controversies
Fein has strongly condemned what she perceives as a corrupted organisational and philanthropic culture in Jewish Australia.{{cite web|url=http://www.jewishwomenofwords.com.au/author/alex-fein/|title=Alex Fein, Author at Jewish Women of Words|website=Jewish Women of Words|accessdate=14 December 2017|archive-date=28 March 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180328094450/http://jewishwomenofwords.com.au/author/alex-fein/|url-status=dead}} Her own philanthropic activity has been unconventional, and her opposition to establishment practices has been criticised as simplistic and naive.
