Early and personal life

Lippmann was born in Paris, France, in the 17th arrondissement.

Through his mother, Marie-Alexandrine-Henriette Dumas, he was the grandson of Alexandre Dumas fils and great-grandson of French writer Alexandre Dumas, author of The Three Musketeers.[https://books.google.com/books?id=rEYgAAAAIAAJ&q=%22alexandre+lippmann%22 Three Musketeers: A Study of the Dumas Family - André Maurois] His father was Jewish.[http://medailles-olympiques-francais.over-blog.com/article-un-jour-un-medaille-olympique-alexandre-lippmann-l-escrimeur-descendant-d-alexandre-dumas-108227472.html Un jour, un médaillé olympique : Alexandre Lippmann, l'escrimeur descendant d'Alexandre Dumas - Dictionnaire des médaillés olympiques français][https://books.google.com/books?id=Qpiphgls99IC&dq=lippmann+jewish+epee&pg=PA104 The International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame - Joseph M. Fencing career

In 1909, he won the French épée championship.

He won five medals, including two gold medals, at three different Olympic Games: a team gold and an individual silver in the 1908 Olympics in London at 26 years of age, a team bronze and individual silver in the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp at 38 years of age, and a team gold in the 1924 Olympics in Paris at the age of 42.{{cite web |url=http://www.olympic.org/alexandre-lippmann |title=Alexandre LIPPMANN |access-date=12 June 2016 |website=Olympic.org |publisher=International Olympic Committee}}{{cite web |url=https://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/athletes/li/alexandre-lippmann-1.html |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200417171827/https://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/athletes/li/alexandre-lippmann-1.html |url-status=dead |archive-date=17 April 2020 |title=Alexandre Lippmann Olympic Results |access-date=28 January 2014 |work=sports-reference.com}}{{cite web |url=http://www.jewishsports.net/BioPages/AlexandreLippmann.htm |title=Alexandre Lippmann |publisher=jewishsports.net}}{{cite book |author1=Bernard Postal |author2=Jesse Silver |author3=Roy Silver |title=Encyclopedia of Jews in Sports |url=https://archive.org/details/encyclopediaofje00post |url-access=registration |year=1965 |publisher=Bloch Publishing Company}}{{Cite web |url=http://www.jewsinsports.org/olympics.asp?ID=59 |title=Lippman, Alexandre: Jews In Sports |access-date=23 May 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160313142607/http://www.jewsinsports.org/olympics.asp?ID=59 |archive-date=13 March 2016 |url-status=dead }}

He missed out on the opportunity to fence in two other Olympic Games. This was because French fencers did not compete at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm because France disagreed with the rules of the competition, and World War I caused the cancellation of what would have been the 1916 Summer Olympics.[https://web.archive.org/web/20200417070306/https://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/summer/1912/FEN/ Fencing at the 1912 Stockholm Summer Games | Olympics at Sports-Reference.com][https://books.google.com/books?id=EpsGxfMMpUgC&dq=france+1912+olympics+fencing&pg=PA247 The 1912 Stockholm Olympics: Essays on the Competitions, the People, the City]

Lippmann was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1984.{{cite web |url=http://www.jta.org/1984/08/06/archive/jews-in-the-olympics-5 |title=Jews in the Olympics |work=Jewish Telegraphic Agency|date = 6 August 1984|url-status=live|access-date = 7 March 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130927200934/http://www.jta.org/1984/08/06/archive/jews-in-the-olympics-5 |archive-date=27 September 2013 }}{{cite book |author=Bob Wechsler |title=Day by Day in Jewish Sports History |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=dAq4TGQsWwwC&pg=PA206 |year=2008 |publisher=KTAV Publishing House, Inc. |isbn=978-0-88125-969-8 |pages=206–}}{{cite book |author=Joseph M.
