History
The institute was created by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, a German philanthropic foundation created from the holdings of the Krupp family upon the death of Alfried Krupp in 1967. Krupp was convicted after World War II of crimes against humanity for the genocidal manner in which he operated his factories; served three years in prison, and was pardoned, but not acquitted.[https://ww2db.com/person_bio.php?person_id=328 World War II Database: Alfried Krupp][https://digitalcommons.lmu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?referer=https://www.google.com/&httpsredir=1&article=1735&context=ilr Stanley Goldman. 2017. A Fuhrer of Industry: Krupp Before, During, and After Nuremberg. Loy. L.A. Int'l& Comp. L. Rev.. Vol 39, No 187.] Krupp used almost 100,000 slave labourers, housed in abhorrent conditions where disease, hunger and dehydration was common. These slave labourers were employed across Krupp's factories.{{Cite journal|last1=Weinberg|first1=Gerhard L.|last2=Manchester|first2=William|date=December 1969|title=The Arms of Krupp, 1587-1968.|url=http://dx.doi.org/10.2307/1985166|journal=Military Affairs|volume=33|issue=3|pages=420|doi=10.2307/1985166|jstor=1985166|issn=0026-3931}} One of his companies used slave labor from the Auschwitz concentration camp.[http://www.thirdreichruins.com/auschwitzzoneofinterest.htm Auschwitz-Birkenau - SS "Interest Zone" - Krupp armaments firm - Weichsel-Union-Metallwerke] Alfried Krupp never admitted wrongdoing and he nor the institute have ever apologised for his crimes.
