Next Generation called the former the best baseball game for Nintendo 64 despite noting minor AI problems and a slower pace. GamePro said that the same console version "is this season's sports phenom, delivering stylish looks and clutch, long-ball gameplay. As of today, it's the best baseball game of the year and a must-buy for all sports nuts."{{cite magazine |author=Johnny Ballgame |url=https://www.nintendo64ever.com/scans/mags/Scan-Magazine-1860-72.jpg |title=All-Star Baseball '99 (N64) [author mislabeled as "Air Hendrix"] |magazine=GamePro |publisher=IDG Entertainment |issue=118 |date=July 1998 |page=72 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20040921090238/http://www.gamepro.com/nintendo/n64/games/reviews/270.shtml |archivedate=21 September 2004 |url-status=live |accessdate=6 July 2020}}{{efn|GamePro gave the Nintendo 64 version two 5/5 scores for graphics and fun factor, and two 4.5/5 scores for sound and control.}}
